From the first settle, his needs came second to the rigid parameters of the nursery. There were a large number of children in his room cared for by well meaning, but stretched and, sometimes, visibly frazzled staff. From the start, I never got the impression the nursery cared about him as an individual child. They wouldn't accommodate his nap schedule, which was simply two naps a day. He often came home distraught with tiredness and mouth sticky from thirst. I fed back all of this at the time, but nothing changed. They were also always looking for reasons to send him home, which meant I never felt secure to focus on my work day. Taken together, I felt anxious every day about having to leave him there and about whether I'd have to dash back to collect him. Things couldn't be more different in his new setting. Brilliant, flexible, genuinely caring nurseries do exist.
