Every member of the team is kind, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Our daughter absolutely loves going and has grown so much in confidence, independence, and social skills since starting. The activities are always creative and engaging, and it's clear that a lot of thought goes into supporting each child's development while making learning fun. Communication with parents is excellent, and it's so lovely seeing updates and photos of what the children have been doing throughout the day. It gives us real peace of mind knowing she is in such a safe, nurturing, and happy environment. A huge thank you to all the wonderful staff for the amazing job you do. We feel incredibly lucky to have found such a fantastic nursery and would highly recommend it to any parent looking for a caring, supportive nursery",

We were met by a wonderfully friendly and vibrant team, an amazing play and learning environment and our son adored the place. Despite all the confusion and additional work Covid 19 has doubtless brought to the team the nursery looked and felt amazing, like a home away from home. We can't wait for him to start in September!",

"reviewBody": "As a new mum of my first baby, sending her to nursery was just terrifying for me. It wasn’t a route I particularly wanted to take (no one wants to return from maternity leave but it has to be done in some situations!) We were recommended Childrens First from a friend and thought we’d just take a look. From our first visit with Kate (Nursery Manager), I knew this was the place my girl was going to thrive. Kate is truly incredible and you can tell from the moment you meet her, this isn’t a job to her, she loves those children as her own. She knew each child by name and circumstance as we were walking round. Nothing is too much for her, each child’s need are met by a each personal circumstance. They work round your child’s needs and routine which I thought was so important. As I mum you spend the first year of their life working on a routine and what works best for them, put them into a nursery and think that is just going to go out the window, absolutely not here. A few settling visits, dad was even able to pop and visit before her first day which was lovely as dads do generally have to miss out on things like this, but as I said, nothing is too much. From her first day, they aren’t assigned a key worker, they let your child pick who they take a shine to, which I LOVED. My daughter has took a shine to Miss Amy. Her first and second day she was particularly upset when I dropped her off, nothing less than I expected being in a strange setting, but I called a few hours later and Miss Amy put my mind at ease to say she calmed down within half an hour and has been making them laugh with her silly faces and giggles ever since. They cuddle them when they need it. I saw this with my own eyes during our settling visits, the younger babies that needed abit of extra comfort and support were sat on the knees of those wonderful ladies in the baby room whilst they still played with the other children. It is impossible to give each child 100%, im a realist, but they do there very best too and I cannot ask for any more. They are all super heroes in that room. Special mention to Millie on reception from greeting you with a smile every drop of and pick up! They really do put your Children First and everything else follows so naturally!",

## About this day nursery

Children 1st @ Derby Road, established in 2002, is an all-year childcare setting located in Long Eaton, Nottingham, offering care for children aged 1 to 9 years. 30pm.

The setting received a 'Good' rating in its latest Ofsted inspection on 22/02/2022. Children here settle in well and confidently choose activities, moving safely between rooms and the engaging outside area.

Staff support children who prefer to play outside more to develop investigation skills, for example, through a mud kitchen where children explore textures and name vegetables. For children who do not have gardens at home, staff provide opportunities to widen their understanding of nature through activities like digging, planting, and insect hunting.

The nursery provides a broad curriculum where children learn through play, fostering imagination and physical development, such as becoming "pirates" or using slides. Babies form strong attachments with staff, showing enjoyment during activities like playing with musical instruments.

Staff demonstrate a commitment to supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) by incorporating songs and sign language, which also aids early literacy development. Children show a positive attitude towards learning, eagerly participating in planned activities, enhancing their language and fine motor skills.

Parents speak highly of the nursery, commending staff professionalism, their knowledge of the children, and friendliness.

What it's like to attend

Children settle in well and confidently choose activities, moving safely between rooms and the outside area. They develop imagination and physical skills through play, such as becoming "pirates" or using slides. Babies form strong attachments with staff, showing enjoyment during activities like playing with musical instruments. Children have a positive attitude towards learning, eagerly participating in staff-planned activities, and developing their language and fine motor skills.

Inspector highlights

- The manager is passionate about her role, and staff support children who prefer to play outside to develop investigation skills.
- Staff effectively foster children's language skills through eye contact, singing, and sign language.
- Staff support children to use their small-muscle skills, preparing them for future learning and school readiness.
- Parents speak highly of the nursery, praising staff professionalism, knowledge of children, and friendliness.
- Staff help children develop personal skills, encouraging independence and guiding behaviour positively.

Areas to develop

- 1 strengthen staff's understanding of how to implement the learning intentions for activities, so they are clear on what skills and knowledge they want children to gain.

## What parents say

Verbatim quotes recorded in the Ofsted inspection

> Parents speak highly of the nursery and say that staff are professional, know their children, and are very friendly.

Inclusion & environment

## How they support every child

SEND provision

Staff sing songs and use sign language to communicate with children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This also helps to support children's early literacy skills.

Outdoor space

Children confidently move around the outside area safely. Since the last inspection, staff now support children who prefer to play outside more to develop their investigation skills. For example, staff introduce children to a mud kitchen, where children extend their learning by making 'vegetable soup', naming vegetables and exploring textures. Some children do not have gardens at home so staff provide opportunities to widen their understanding of nature, such as digging in the nursery garden, planting vegetables, and hunting for insects.

We couldn't be happier with the care our daughter receives at this nursery. From the moment we first visited, the staff made us feel completely welcome and reassured. We feel incredibly lucky to have found such a fantastic nursery and would highly recommend it to any parent looking for a caring, supportive nursery

Super nursery and amazing staff. Could not have better support, care and understanding for my son - he has a wonderful time every day, has so much opportunity to learn and play and has made lovely friendships. It's a wonderful place.

My husband, son and I went to have a look around Children 1st Nursery on Derby Road today in view of our son starting in September. We were met by a wonderfully friendly and vibrant team, an amazing play and learning environment and our son adored the place. Despite all the confusion and additional work Covid 19 has doubtless brought to the team the nursery looked and felt amazing, like a home away from home. We can't wait for him to start in September!

As a new mum of my first baby, sending her to nursery was just terrifying for me. They really do put your Children First and everything else follows so naturally!

My son has been attending Children 1st for nearly two years now, great food and education, he has friends here, is happy and comfortable with the Nurses and most importantly has significantly grown in confidence since attending, we rarely get those moments when introducing him to new people or places where he hides or won't talk, he's a happy, confident 2 year old and in big part that's down to his nursery.
