There is a specific space for under twos and another for children aged two years until they transition to school. The nursery provides both indoor and outdoor play spaces, including a side garden for the younger children and an upstairs area for preschoolers, ensuring safe and inviting environments for all. The approach taken at Ferndown Day Nursery encourages self-selection of resources and activities, promoting independence and catering to individual learning requirements. They regularly introduce new activities to reflect seasons and global events. The daily routine balances child-initiated and adult-led activities, free-flow sessions, and outdoor time, allowing children the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace. They work closely with parents and other agencies to ensure they understand what each child requires and how to support them fully. The special educational needs coordinator spoke to the inspector about how they support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Outdoor space When children are in the garden, staff do not clean their hands after wiping children's noses, which does not fully prevent cross-infection. Staff ensure that children wear sun cream when playing outside and bring them indoors when the sun is too hot.
