"reviewBody": "I registered my child with Merrydale Nursery (Address: Coppid Beech Hill, Wokingham RG40 1PD) on May 29, 2024 and received written confirmation for a 15 hours per week place. On March 5, 2025, they confirmed again that my child was “on record to start in September.”\n\nThis month, I was suddenly informed that my child was not in their system. Initially, Merrydale denied ever having her on record. Only after I forwarded their own confirmation emails did they admit there had been a mistake by a former staff member (“Jade”) who has since left.\n\nOver the course of two phone calls, the explanations were inconsistent—first, that my child was not in their system at all; second, that it was due to a staff error from last year. When I requested a written explanation by email, none was provided. I was told “registering a child doesn’t guarantee admission,” yet no clear criteria or priority system was ever explained. This raises serious concerns that admissions may not be handled on a transparent, first-come-first-served basis.\n\nI was also told over phone, Merrydale HQ is fully aware of this situation but has taken no action—suggesting that such unprofessional handling, and potential discrimination in admissions, is tolerated at the highest level.\n\nParents deserve transparency, fairness, and accountability. Unfortunately, my experience demonstrates that Merrydale Nursery failed on all three counts.",

"reviewBody": "My eldest son attended Merrydale from 1 year all the way through to finishing Pre-School. He was happy coming in on his set days and was very excited to greet his teachers - this just showed how much care and thought they put intothe children as they are always genuinely happy to see the staff. They have set up numerous events for families to join in over the years and lots of effort were put into these. My second also joined aged 1 and has just transitioned downstairs and he is equally as happy. He often gets excited when I talk about his teachers and is always happy going in. I went to see a lot of nurseries in the area. This was my favourite by far. It has a truly homely and intimate environment and all the staff there are exemplary in my experience. I would not hesitate to recommend them.",

They do a great job at making sure he’s okay and keep me up to date and help relieve any worries.\n\nThe staff know all the families which is lovely to see. Katie the manager is very involved which is also very reassuring.\n\nMy son loves going and has developed so much since starting there, they do so many activities with the kids everyday.\n\nThank you for everything that you do for our babies ❤️ and the biggest thank you to everyone in the Nest!",

Nursery manager flat out said (and I quote) - she needs to be able to walk by the time she is in toddler room because if she requires a walking frame we won’t be able to accept her. All the other kids in the toddler room will be walking) I said well are you not able to make accommodations (legally she shouldn’t have refused my child unless there wasn’t space for her, as in full) and said, erm no not really, sorry about that. Do not send your children to this nursery as clearly they are not an inclusive environment; what will they be teaching the kids regarding being accepting of children that are different to them?? Major, major red flag. I’m reporting this setting to ofsted. No option to give it —1 star\n\nIn response to the nursery: yes, this was definitely your setting because from the info on your website I was really keen to come and visit and it seemed on paper a really good setting. I will\nDefinitely raise a complaint as per the policy.",

## About this day nursery

Merrydale Day Nursery and Pre-School in Wokingham, established in 1991, provides childcare for children aged 1 to 4 years. The nursery operates year-round, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, offering a consistent and reliable service for families.

With a capacity of 68 children, the nursery focuses on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, nurturing children's development in a stimulating environment. The dedicated staff team, including experienced practitioners and newer recruits, are committed to building strong relationships with each child and their family, ensuring individual needs are met and children feel valued and secure.

The setting prioritises an inclusive culture, where children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) or those facing barriers to learning receive thoughtful adaptations and consistent support, including one-to-one assistance when necessary. Leaders effectively use the graduated approach to monitor progress and make adjustments, seeking advice from external professionals where appropriate.

Children benefit from a rich outdoor learning environment, where they can explore, observe nature, and develop their physical skills through activities like digging in sand and mark-making. While the nursery is actively working to enhance mathematical understanding within the curriculum, the overall focus on communication, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional growth helps children build the skills and confidence needed for their future learning, including their transition to school.

Safeguarding is robustly managed with an open culture, ensuring children feel safe and secure.

Our ethos

We believe all children have an equal right to be fulfilled, unique and healthy individuals. Our vision is to provide the caring, happy and challenging environment every day which their parents would want themselves, making them 'Ready to learn, ready for life.'

What it's like

Although there have been recent changes in staffing, leaders' actions are beginning to bring greater stability, which is helping to support more consistent experiences for children's learning and care. Most children separate confidently from their parents and/or carers and are greeted by caring staff who know them well and respond sensitively to their individual needs. Across the nursery, children flourish because they feel valued, develop trusting relationships, and enjoy meaningful experiences that help them build the skills and confidence needed for their future learning.

I registered my child with Merrydale Nursery (Address: Coppid Beech Hill, Wokingham RG40 1PD) on May 29, 2024 and received written confirmation for a 15 hours per week place. On March 5, 2025, they confirmed again that my child was “on record to start in September.” This month, I was suddenly informed that my child was not in their system. Initially, Merrydale denied ever having her on record. Only after I forwarded their own confirmation emails did they admit there had been a mistake by a former staff member (“Jade”) who has since left. Over the course of two phone calls, the explanations were inconsistent—first, that my child was not in their system at all; second, that it was due to a staff error from last year. When I requested a written explanation by email, none was provided. I was told “registering a child doesn’t guarantee admission,” yet no clear criteria or priority system was ever explained. This raises serious concerns that admissions may not be handled on a transparent, first-come-first-served basis. I was also told over phone, Merrydale HQ is fully aware of this situation but has taken no action—suggesting that such unprofessional handling, and potential discrimination in admissions, is tolerated at the highest level. Parents deserve transparency, fairness, and accountability. Unfortunately, my experience demonstrates that Merrydale Nursery failed on all three counts.

My eldest son attended Merrydale from 1 year all the way through to finishing Pre-School. I would not hesitate to recommend them.

Lovely nursery, they have lots of different rooms inside and a lovely open space outside for the kids to play. All staff have been so attentive to my son from the beginning, especially if he’s having an off day or isn’t well. They do a great job at making sure he’s okay and keep me up to date and help relieve any worries. The staff know all the families which is lovely to see. Katie the manager is very involved which is also very reassuring. My son loves going and has developed so much since starting there, they do so many activities with the kids everyday. Thank you for everything that you do for our babies ❤️ and the biggest thank you to everyone in the Nest!

Refused to admit my daughter with possible special needs. No option to give it —1 star In response to the nursery: yes, this was definitely your setting because from the info on your website I was really keen to come and visit and it seemed on paper a really good setting. I will Definitely raise a complaint as per the policy.

Our daughter has been attending the nursery since she was 18 months old, up until the school age. The nursery and its staff are absolutely brilliant, focusing equally on children safety, social skills, the start of their academic development, and having a great fun all along. Our daughter adores them, and cant wait to go to the nursery every morning.
