"reviewBody": "My daughter attended Monkey Puzzle Nursery for around 2–3 weeks in the baby room, she was at the time 5/6 months old and I’m writing this review to warn other parents based on our experience there.\n\nAlthough the building and outdoor area are both good, the quality of care we experienced in the baby room fell far below what we expected, and we ultimately removed our daughter because of a serious safeguarding incident that was formally reported to the local authority.\n\nCommunication & Staff Concerns\n\nFrom the beginning, communication was poor and often inconsistent. While the manager herself was very kind and approachable, she always seemed overwhelmed, and in my view this affected communication both with parents and within the room.\n\nI also had concerns about staff training and professionalism. Several interactions made me question whether all staff were fully equipped to handle the needs of very young babies.\n\nConcerning Behaviour Toward Babies\n\nOne of the most upsetting things I witnessed was the way a baby-room leader spoke to children. On three separate occasions, I personally heard her shouting at a baby who was crying, saying things like “Stop crying now, that’s enough!”\nThis behaviour felt completely inappropriate, especially for babies who are still adjusting to being away from home and often just need comfort.\n\nFeeding Instructions Ignored\n\nAt 5–6 months old, my daughter was still on first-stage milk, and we had clearly stated that we did not want her moved to follow-on milk yet. Despite this, we later discovered she was given age-2 milk without our consent. This was extremely concerning to us as parents.\n\nSafeguarding Incident\n\nThe incident that made us remove her immediately involved her being put down for a nap in the sleep room and left without supervision, with no handover and no monitoring equipment (no camera, monitor, or walkie-talkie).\nWhen staff eventually returned, she had been crying alone in her cot for a concerning prolonged period (we’ve been told later that week the amount of time from CCTV).\n\nThis was not a misunderstanding — the issue was serious enough that it was formally reported to the relevant local authorities as a safeguarding concern. Because of the seriousness of the situation, we withdrew her straight away.\n\nWe still have not heard anything directly from the nursery regarding this incident.\n\nI understand every family has different experiences, but based on what we went through in such a short time, I would strongly encourage parents to look very carefully and ask detailed questions before choosing this nursery.",

## About this day nursery

Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Battersea, established in 2018, is a childcare setting for children aged 0-4 years located in Wandsworth, London. Registered to accommodate up to 71 children, the nursery operates all year round from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday to Friday, providing full-day care.

The dedicated team consists of 22 staff members, with 12 holding childcare qualifications ranging from Level 2 to 5. While the nursery is a lively environment where children generally feel safe and enjoy playing, the recent inspection on May 15, 2025, noted that the overall effectiveness requires improvement.

This is due to identified weaknesses in practice affecting the quality of children's learning experiences, particularly in supporting personal development and ensuring consistent behavioural expectations. Leaders and managers have acknowledged these areas and are actively working with the local authority to implement improvements to enhance the provision for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Our ethos

Our EYFS-based curriculum nurtures every child’s development through play. From babies to preschoolers, children grow their social, emotional, physical, and communication skills while exploring literacy, maths, arts, and the world around them. With a dedicated Key Person and learning that extends indoors and outdoors, we build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. We put loving, high-quality care at the heart of everything we do, creating a safe, secure environment where children feel valued and confident.

What it's like

Children are safe and overall have fun and join in with play at this lively nursery. In general, staff are welcoming and friendly with the children. However, there are several weaknesses in practice that mean the quality of children's learning experience is not good.

- improve the key-person arrangements so staff get to know children's individual needs well and tailor their care accordingly
- improve the arrangements for children with SEND so that suitable plans are put in place to meet their needs
- implement effective behaviour management strategies to support children to learn to understand and regulate their own behaviour, and ensure these are used consistently

- implement effective supervision arrangements so staff receive support, coaching and training to meet the needs of the children they care for.

What it's like to attend

Children are safe and overall have fun and join in with play at this lively nursery. In general, staff are welcoming and friendly with the children. However, there are several weaknesses in practice that mean the quality of children's learning experience is not good.

Inspector highlights

- Children are interested in the resources available.
- When groups are smaller, children cooperate in play with their friends and learn to take turns and share their toys.
- Some staff support children's learning well. They teach children to use scissors to cut paper and introduce new words, such as 'melon', to extend their vocabulary.
- Children have some opportunities to develop their personal and social skills, learning to feed themselves and to use the toilet.
- Leaders and managers have identified some of the weaknesses outlined in this report. They are liaising with the local authority to put plans in place to improve their provision.

Areas to develop

- 1 The curriculum lacks ambition and clarity for children's learning.
- 2 Staff often have the same expectations for all children in each age group.
- 3 The provider has identified weaknesses in the arrangements for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
- 4 Children's behaviour is inconsistently managed.
- 5 Some staff support children's learning well. However, some staff do not always model the behaviour they expect of children.
- 6 The supervision arrangements for staff are ineffective.
- 7 Children have some opportunities to develop their personal and social skills.
- 8 Leaders and managers have identified some of the weaknesses outlined in this report. They are liaising with the local authority to put plans in place to improve their provision.

## How they support every child

SEND provision

The provider has identified weaknesses in the arrangements for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They have identified children who need additional support. Leaders and managers are beginning to liaise with parents to put plans in place to meet their needs. However, these plans are still in their infancy and have yet to be embedded.

Outdoor space

Children often run around the room and garden unchallenged. However, when groups are smaller, children cooperate in play with their friends and learn to take turns and share their toys.

I have had a great experience with both my children being at monkey puzzle battersea. My first child has now left but i still have my second child there. The staff and management have treated me and my family like family. They have done everything timely and made sure that my children were okay. Im glad that we chose this nursery.

My daughter attended Monkey Puzzle Nursery for around 2–3 weeks in the baby room, she was at the time 5/6 months old and I’m writing this review to warn other parents based on our experience there. Although the building and outdoor area are both good, the quality of care we experienced in the baby room fell far below what we expected, and we ultimately removed our daughter because of a serious safeguarding incident that was formally reported to the local authority. Communication & Staff Concerns From the beginning, communication was poor and often inconsistent. While the manager herself was very kind and approachable, she always seemed overwhelmed, and in my view this affected communication both with parents and within the room. I also had concerns about staff training and professionalism. Several interactions made me question whether all staff were fully equipped to handle the needs of very young babies. Concerning Behaviour Toward Babies One of the most upsetting things I witnessed was the way a baby-room leader spoke to children. On three separate occasions, I personally heard her shouting at a baby who was crying, saying things like “Stop crying now, that’s enough!” This behaviour felt completely inappropriate, especially for babies who are still adjusting to being away from home and often just need comfort. Feeding Instructions Ignored At 5–6 months old, my daughter was still on first-stage milk, and we had clearly stated that we did not want her moved to follow-on milk yet. Despite this, we later discovered she was given age-2 milk without our consent. This was extremely concerning to us as parents. Safeguarding Incident The incident that made us remove her immediately involved her being put down for a nap in the sleep room and left without supervision, with no handover and no monitoring equipment (no camera, monitor, or walkie-talkie). When staff eventually returned, she had been crying alone in her cot for a concerning prolonged period (we’ve been told later that week the amount of time from CCTV). This was not a misunderstanding — the issue was serious enough that it was formally reported to the relevant local authorities as a safeguarding concern. Because of the seriousness of the situation, we withdrew her straight away. We still have not heard anything directly from the nursery regarding this incident. I understand every family has different experiences, but based on what we went through in such a short time, I would strongly encourage parents to look very carefully and ask detailed questions before choosing this nursery.

We are extremely happy with the nursery — the manager and the staff are wonderful. They are very flexible and always try to meet our needs. My daughter is always happy when I go to pick her up. I strongly recommend this nursery.

Not sure why anyone would ever send their kids here, a lot of the staff smoke and when I went to look around kids were literally left on their own, I was shocked, there was a staff member in the garden rocking a child with her hoodie covering her entire face is was actually quite scary, I was like get me out of here, I would never send my kids here even if you paid me, if the nursery are reading this and I hope they do, you need to do better! Please do not smoke around children!!!!
