Here’s what it covers, how it works in practice, and the questions worth asking your nursery. Every Ofsted-registered nursery, pre-school, childminder and reception class follows the EYFS framework and works towards the same set of EYFS learning goals. It can sound bureaucratic. In practice, a well-run setting brings EYFS for parents to life as play — children won’t be sitting at desks. This guide to the EYFS curriculum explains the 7 areas of learning, the milestones, how assessment works, and what to look for on a nursery visit. ## The 7 areas of learning EYFS splits learning into **3 prime areas** (essential foundations, prioritised for under-3s) and **4 specific areas** (built on top of the primes): ### Prime areas - **Communication and language** — listening, attention, understanding and speaking. - **Physical development** — gross motor (running, climbing) and fine motor (pencil grip, buttons). - **Personal, social and emotional development** — self-regulation, managing self, building relationships. ### Specific areas - **Literacy** — comprehension, word reading and writing. - **Mathematics** — number, numerical patterns. - **Understanding the world** — past and present, people, culture and communities, the natural world. - **Expressive arts and design** — creating with materials, being imaginative and expressive. ## How EYFS looks in practice (it’s play) EYFS explicitly recognises that **play is how young children learn**. A good setting offers a mix of: - **Child-initiated play** — children choose what they do; staff observe and extend their interests. - **Adult-led activities** — short, focused moments (a phonics game, a song, a maths puzzle). - **Indoor and outdoor learning, in equal measure.** You should _not_ see toddlers sitting at desks doing worksheets. You should see staff narrating play ("you’ve put the blue block on top — it’s the tallest tower yet!"), offering open-ended materials, and following the child’s lead. ## How your child is assessed There are two formal checkpoints: - **Progress check at 2.** A short written summary of your child’s development in the 3 prime areas, shared with you. Required between the second and third birthday. - **EYFS Profile, end of reception.** Teachers judge whether each child is meeting the expected level in each of 17 Early Learning Goals. In between, your nursery should share ongoing observations — increasingly through an app, but always grounded in conversation. Ask: _"What’s my child’s current next step in communication?"_ A good key person will answer specifically. ## What to look for on a visit When you [find a nursery near you](/nurseries), use these questions on your visit to see the EYFS in action rather than just on paper: - Staff who narrate and extend play instead of directing it. - A "language-rich" environment: books, songs, conversation, not constant background music or TV. - Daily outdoor learning, including in rainy weather. - Visible **characteristics of effective learning** in action — children persisting, trying ideas, taking the lead. - A relaxed but purposeful atmosphere; not chaos, not silence.
