Chiltern Nursery & Training College, established in 1931 by Miss Elizabeth Halliday, a qualified midwife, has a rich history centred on providing exceptional early years care and education, alongside high-quality childcare training. Evolving from a babies nursing home and residential facility during WWII, it transitioned into a day care in the 1980s, continuing its bespoke nannying and training programmes.
Today, Chiltern NTC operates as an established early years education and day nursery, offering a comprehensive work-based training programme. The nursery prioritises a child-led approach, offering a supportive and homely environment that complements family life and fosters each child’s potential.
With a commitment to delivering "over and above" quality of care, Chiltern NTC focuses on nurturing growth, emotional well-being, and stimulating interaction. The nursery prides itself on its high staff-to-child ratios, ensuring individualised attention, and its extensive grounds provide ample opportunities for outdoor exploration and learning about nature.
Furthermore, the nursery emphasises healthy eating habits by preparing all food from scratch, adhering to Early Years Foundation Stage nutrition guidance. The college also maintains a strong focus on professional development through its rigorous on-site training and one-to-one assessment for both trainees and qualified staff.
Our ethos
Chiltern Nursery & Training College aims to provide the highest standards of excellence in early years care, education and training. We consider these factors when brought together to be key in delivering the care, support, and education that nurtures and inspires young children. By complementing family life we can help bring out the true potential of every child at Chiltern Nursery & Training College.

Inclusion & environment
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are well supported. Additional funding is used effectively to support individual children's needs. Staff effectively communicate with other agencies and parents to ensure consistency for children. When staff identify learning delays or additional needs, support is put in place in the quickest time possible. This means all children make good progress.
Children have ample opportunities to develop their physical skills. The extensive outdoor areas are well planned by staff to provide children with opportunities to take part in a range of different activities. Older children skilfully race around on bikes and navigate the areas well. Children laugh as they join in with a game of tennis with staff. Younger children enjoy digging in the sand and balance on wooden planks with staff support.
Our son has attended Chiltern since March 2023, so have experienced both Under 2s and Over 2s now. We've been very happy with our choice, the fact that it's a large nursery and training college is great as it benefits from economies of scale: multiple huge playgrounds, fresh meals cooked on-site, plenty of staff whenever carers get sick, a rotation of recently trained carers with the most up to date training, even their own soft play centre! We've found it great value for money as we don't need to supply our own nappies, and there is a SENDCo who has worked with our son very closely to accommodate for his needs. Thank you Chiltern!
Read on GoogleOur kids love this nursery and we love it too! Everything is really well organised and things seem to run very well. It's a safe place- both physically and emotionally. Every member of staff (even in other parts of the nursery) know our children and give them a lot of care and attention. The location and facilities are incredible- our kids are outside so often and there is such a variety of things they can do indoors and outdoors. The information provided to parents is excellent and the nursery goes above and beyond to engage us. Over the two years we've had our children here, we have found no reason to complain about anything! We have two children at Chiltern. Our eldest joined at the age of 2, in Sep 2022 and went straight into the big kids' class (Bees). Our youngest was in the baby class for a year (Glastonbury) and is now in the bigger kids' class (Elizabeth). The staff at all three classes and the management have been brilliant the whole time. Our children are thriving here!
Read on GoogleWe are extremely happy to have chosen Chiltern Nursery for our daughter. The rooms are large, clean and bright and the vast garden is perfectly adjusted to the little ones. The staff is very friendly and caring and look after the children just wonderfully. Also, the nursery caters for any special requirements (diet or when teething) a child might have and are always helpful and accommodating. Our daughter is always happy to go to the nursery and play with her friends and the carers. And we are very pleased to see how independent and brave she's become and how much she developed her social and communication skills since attending the nursery. The children always get a lot of attention and are entertained with various themed games and songs (e.g. there was special sensory play for the Jubilee). We are always well informed about our daughter's day and her routine and love the parent app. If we had a second child, I'd choose this nursery straight away.
Read on GoogleI am very happy with the way my daughter has evolved whilst attending the nursery and I would recommend it to anyone open heartedly as your child will be well cared for and in a safe environment. My child is bilingual and thrived and developed so much in couple of months. The evaluation criteria are very helpful, clear, concise and in accordance with each child age development. The food is great, as well. All the staff is very supportive, including management team. They have been so helpful when we moved overseas, incorporating games and themes about the new place, helping my child to understand better the change and accepting it easier. Thank you for all your involvement and dedication.
Read on GoogleBest nursery in Reading. When my son was around 10 months old my friends recommended this nursery to me. After having him there for two years I am absolutely happy with the nursery and recommend all my friends to go there. The ladies are amazing, so good with children, very patient, teach them lots of things, food is also good. I can not thank them enough, they had done such a great job taking care if my child. I now have him in a new nursery due to the whole family moved away from Reading, despite being one of the best in Fulham and of course much more expensive than Chiltern, the new nursery is definitely not as good as Chiltern. My son and I miss Chiltern a lot.
