Purple Jay Herne Hill Dulwich, which opened in 2023, is a childcare setting for children aged 0-4 years located in South London. The nursery operates Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM throughout the year.
The current Ofsted rating is 'Inadequate', following an inspection in January 2026. Improvements have been made since the previous inspection, including stronger key-person arrangements that help babies form secure attachments.
Staff gather essential information from parents to cater to children's learning and development needs, ensuring sleep routines mirror those at home. The setting has a well-resourced outdoor area where children enjoy playing in the fresh air, with separate activities for older children and babies.
Staff are aware of the diverse languages spoken by children and families, and celebrate cultural and religious events. The nursery also has an allocated staff member who monitors the progress of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and leaders are knowledgeable about local referral routes for specialist advice.
Our ethos
Purple Jay Herne Hill Dulwich focuses on developing children's emotional intelligence and creativity within a nurturing and stimulating environment. They emphasise a personalised approach, strong family values, and close communication with parents.
What it's like
Children benefit from improvements made since the last inspection, including strengthened key-person arrangements that help babies make secure attachments. Staff gather important information from parents, which helps them understand children's learning and development needs and allows children to experience sleep routines that mirror those from home. However, the learning and development needs of pre-walking babies and less confident speakers are not closely considered, and feeding and mealtime routines are not well implemented.
The nursery charges a flat deposit fee upon booking regardless of the number of days a child attends. Standard session rates, age bands, and inclusions are not detailed in the provided information.

Inclusion & environment
There are arrangements to monitor the progress of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Staff complete training to increase their understanding of methods to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Leaders are aware of local referral routes and know how to seek specialist advice. Allocated staff help to identify and monitor the progress of children at risk of falling behind in their learning. They are effective in their role and promptly share information with parents when emerging barriers to learning are identified.
Children have frequent opportunities to play and develop their physical skills in an inviting outdoor environment. They particularly enjoy their time in the well-resourced and inviting outdoor area. Older children enjoy hiding in bushes, while babies receive close support from staff as they make marks with brushes in the garden.
Although staff provide opportunities for some children to develop early communication in their home languages, this is inconsistent. Some children have fewer opportunities to recognise, hear, or use their home languages, which affects how quickly those who speak English as an additional language can develop their communication and language skills.
Both of my sons have been at Purple Jay Herne Hill since the age of 9 months (my eldest was there from day one of when the Nursery went from Mother Goose to Purple Jay). We have experience of our kids being in all aged rooms as they started in the baby room and my eldest is now about to go into the oldest class at nursery. They are both well settled, confident and flourishing and love going in (my oldest even asks if he can go to nursery on the weekends!) The nursery provides a really nurturing and caring environment with lots of outdoor play which is one of the reasons we chose this nursery. Both my sons love every member of staff (although they both also have their absolute favourites too!) It’s great that they get to do lots of imaginative and sensory play and they both love the weekly music sessions. The menu the chef provides is really well balanced and they do cater for all diets/needs (the kids eat better than we do!). I can’t recommend this nursery enough and we’ll be really sad to leave everyone when we move house and have to start a new nursery for the boys.
Read on GoogleWe have loved having our children at Purple Jay Herne Hill Dulwich. Our son has recently left to start reception and our daughter is still there and we couldn’t be happier. The children are looked after by brilliant and caring staff members across all the rooms, and there is a real sense of family at the nursery. The children are encouraged to be outside as much as possible, learn through play and guidance and they come home happy and stimulated! I would definitely recommend Purple Jay Herne Hill Dulwich to those in the area.
Read on GoogleMy son has been attending Purple Jay Nursery in Herne Hill, Dulwich since he was 10 months old, and now my 8-month-old daughter has just started too. From the very beginning, the staff have been so warm, kind, and supportive, which made the transition so much easier for us as parents. The team genuinely care about each child’s wellbeing and development, and my son has flourished in confidence, learning, and social skills since being here. The nursery provides a safe, nurturing environment full of engaging activities, and communication with parents is always excellent. It’s lovely to see both of my children so settled and happy each day. We feel really lucky to have found Purple Jay and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
