Barrow Pre-School Playgroup, nestled in Barrow Upon Soar, is an Ofsted-registered charitable organisation providing childcare and early years education for children aged 2-4 years. Established in 1971, it operates from the Methodist Church Hall, overseen by a dedicated management committee composed of parents and staff.
The playgroup prides itself on offering an inclusive and welcoming environment where children are encouraged to flourish through play-based learning. The passionate and enthusiastic staff treat each child as an individual, fostering their unique needs and development.
The playgroup's ethos centres on providing a safe and stimulating space where children can explore, gain confidence, and develop at their own pace. They aim to nurture emotional well-being and promote curiosity, responding to children's interests and ideas to guide their learning journey.
The playgroup is open Monday to Friday during term time and offers funded places for eligible children.
Our ethos
We aim to provide a safe and stimulating environment where children learn through play to reach their full potential. We are sensitive to the children’s individual needs and allow them to develop at their own pace. We strongly believe in celebrating every child’s strengths, personal qualities and everything that makes them unique. It is so important to us that every child feels happy, secure and confident. Staff are warm and caring and take the time to get to know every child, nurturing their emotional wellbeing. We aim to promote curiosity and exploration through our child led learning opportunities. Throughout each session, we always support children’s current interests, fascinations and ideas, and respond to their needs and next steps.
What it's like
Children are greeted warmly by staff and encouraged to talk about their experiences, helping them to feel valued. Praise for achievements helps to raise self-esteem and confidence. Children are keen to engage in activities and benefit from staff planning the environment to promote their interests and learning, such as using cardboard boxes for imaginative play.
Fees are charged per session for non-funded hours, with invoices issued and paid termly in advance. Additional charges apply for early drop-offs and lunch fees for specific sessions. Funding is available for eligible children aged nine months to four years during term time.

Inclusion & environment
Children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well by the manager, staff and the special educational needs co-ordinator. Targeted plans are put in place to support children's individual needs. Additional funding is used to provide children with one-to-one support from staff for their care and learning.
Children are offered a safe space to develop their large physical movements. For example, staff ask them climb steps and jump off onto soft matting. The inspector observed the quality of education during activities, both indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.
