Inclusion & environment
Staff make good use of advice from external professionals to support children with additional needs. This provides key persons with specific strategies to implement in the nursery so children receive targeted support to help them catch up.
Very young children show resilience as they practise their physical skills on the step and slide unit. Children are keen to share with friends and adults details of the activities they join in outside of the nursery, such as park fun runs.
Staff use a variety of ways to promote children's communication skills, including a large number of children who speak English as an additional language (EAL). Staff suitably follow processes to help children who speak EAL make connections in their learning. However, at times staff practice is variable and approaches to support children who speak EAL are not followed up as quickly as they could be.
Our child has been with this nursery full time from when she was 1.5 years old until now that she’s due to start primary school! We feel so incredibly lucky to have had a place in this nursery. Our daughter has loved her time there from the very start, has made amazing friends and has learnt so much from her carers. Each and every staff member has consistently shown so much kindness, initiative and creativity. We’ve been so grateful for the continuity of care from a team of such dedicated, hardworking staff. They clearly have the children’s well-being at heart and we can’t thank them enough for this. We’d like to note that every single day at drop off and pick up, no matter the time, the environment has always felt happy and safe. Besides, the garden in the summer is such a gem! The management team has been kind, flexible and responsive. We’ve honestly never had any issues, and are grateful for the times they’ve gone above and beyond. We highly recommend this nursery, first and foremost for the excellent care.
Read on GoogleI'm writing to warn other parents about the subpar care at Bright Horizons Portswood Day Nursery and Preschool from Southampton. My child attended for only three weeks in April, but the experience was marred by several issues. - Inadequate settling process and inconsistent caregivers (over 5 different staff members) - Child struggled to eat and sleep due to lack of comfort - Injury occurred due to staff inattention - Designated caregiver was frequently absent (medical leave and vacation) without adequate replacement - Hygiene concerns and sick children attending, resulting in my child contracting a viral infection - Lack of transparency (delayed access to tracking app) and prioritization of payments over child care When I decided to withdraw my child, I was asked for an excessive two-month notice period. It seems the nursery's priority is financial gain rather than providing quality care. Specifically, I hold Nursery Mangement (apparently, I can't mention names), accountable for the nursery's shortcomings. Overall, I found the nursery to be unprofessional, uninvolved, and lacking empathy. Avoid this nursery at all costs. Other parents deserve better.
Read on GoogleOur son has been very happy attending Portswood day nursery and preschool since day one. He joined when he was nearly 2.5 years old, after we moved to the area. The management is doing a great job (communication, response, etc.) and we have been happy with carers in both toddlers and pre-school rooms. My son actually misses going back to preschool after we have been away for some days. I know we will all miss this nursery and I just hope my son will have the same love for his school starting in September that he has for his pre-school. Note: I felt I really needed to write a review after seeing the most recent review about late charges. The nursery's official closing time is 6:30pm which is quite late comparing to most other nurseries. Yes, they do sometimes, very rarely, ask us to bring our kid in late due to staffing issues. But these cases are rare and always due to circumstances outside their control like train strikes or unplanned road closures. I understand that it's annoying to be charged for picking up one's kid only 15 minutes late, but we parents also need to accept that the staff need to go home too after their long day, and the nursery is open until quite late compared to the norm.
Read on GoogleMy children have been happy at Portswood Day Nursery for the last 4 years. I have two boys who bounce in everyday and have great relationships with all the staff. They come home and show us all their art and other projects. I believe the nursery is preparing my eldest for school well. The kids tell me the food is good. The price is fair vs other UK nurseries, the caveat to that is that fundamentally the British childcare provision is poor, and therefore nursery is an expensive endeavour across the board. Many thanks to Trudy and the team, Lottie, Piper and everyone else who has had so much to do with the boys over the years.
Read on GoogleI truly love how professional this nursery is. I feel rest assured whenever i drop my kids off and my kids have grown to love this nursery so much. My son loves this nursery so much that he quickly obeys if told, we weren't going to take him to nursery whenever he's acting silly. He talks about how he loves painting, drawing, building and playing with friends in the garden. My little daughter comes home singing nursery rhymes, turning pages of her story books and pretending to read out and always cheering everyone up just like her key workers in nursery. Portswood day nursery, bright horizon i will say,is a great nursery to choose, when thinking of an early year child progression and development.
