Busy Bees Day Nursery at Nottingham University, established in 2010, is a welcoming "Childcare on non-domestic premises" setting located in the grounds of Nottingham University, operating independently of the university. Open all year round from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, it provides a nurturing environment for children aged 0-4 years.
The nursery received a "Good" rating in its latest Ofsted inspection on 5th April 2023, reflecting its commitment to quality early years provision. Children attending Busy Bees are well-supported by staff, developing a strong sense of belonging and demonstrating positive relationships with their carers.
The curriculum is designed by the manager and staff to address any learning gaps, with a particular focus on enhancing children's communication and language skills. This includes targeted support, such as helping toddlers to identify and copy initial sounds in words.
Children are encouraged to develop a range of skills, from early mark-making with large crayons for babies to using scissors effectively in pre-school, promoting the muscle development needed for writing. Practical life skills are also a key focus, with toddlers learning to pour their own drinks and pre-schoolers helping to set tables, fostering independence and self-care.
While children enjoy being physically active both indoors and outdoors, and pre-schoolers demonstrate their balancing skills on scooters, the nursery aims to further encourage children to take and manage risks in their play, thereby challenging their abilities. Parents commend the nursery for providing a balanced approach to learning through play and preparing children for school, with good communication between staff and families to support continuous learning at home.
The nursery also effectively manages safeguarding, with staff well-versed in identifying and reporting any concerns.

"Parents say that staff provide their children with a balance of learning through play and learning skills for school."
Inclusion & environment
The manager and staff use a curriculum to help close any gaps in children's learning. This includes providing support for children to develop their communication and language skills.
Children show that they enjoy being physically active, indoors and outdoors. For example, pre-school children show how they can balance when they ride on scooters outdoors. However, staff do not fully encourage children to take and manage risks in their play indoors and outdoors.
My son has been attending busy bees at UoN for the last year, the staff have been fantastic from the start, caring and patient, especially his first key person, Aishah. He has moved up to the toddler room and talks excitedly about his day, lots of activities and a nutritious menu. Communication and support has been great from management. It’s easy to book additional nursery days when needed. We’re very happy to have chosen Busy Bees and recommend to others 🙂
