About this day nursery

Buttercup Montessori Kindergarten, established in 2001, provides high-quality childcare across its Galleywood and Springfield settings in Chelmsford, with a new London Road location opening in 2026. The kindergarten welcomes children from birth to five years old, offering both full and sessional day care delivered by qualified Early Years Practitioners.

A core element of Buttercup Montessori is its integration of the Montessori philosophy with traditional play and learning, aiming to foster an independent educational foundation for each child. The nursery strives to create a stimulating, happy, caring, and structured environment, allowing children the freedom to learn and play at their own pace, which in turn helps them discover and grow to their full potential, developing into happy and confident individuals.

The Montessori method, developed by Maria Montessori, focuses on engaging children in educational tasks in a way that makes learning enjoyable and unconscious. This approach allows children to work at their own pace and enhance their capabilities.

The curriculum includes diverse developmental learning areas such as Practical Life, Sensorial activities (discovering the five senses), Geography (learning about continents and cultures), Botany (exploring plants and wildlife), Spanish, and Dance (music and movement). Buttercup Montessori aims for a smooth transition for children and parents from home to nursery and eventually to primary school.

Our ethos

Our aim is to provide a stimulating, happy, caring and structured environment where your child will be free to learn and play, enabling them to discover and grow. Both of our Buttercup Nurseries, based in Chelmsford, incorporate the Montessori philosophy alongside traditional play and learning activities giving an independent education and start in life for each child.

Our 3 year old little boy has been attending buttercup nursery since he was 9months old and he absolutely loves it here. The staff are amazing and the overall structure of the nursery is second to none. For what they have done in regards to his education, confidence and social ability has been priceless. Not only are they are a business they also treat you as family and I could not recommend this place enough !

My 3 year old son has been going to Buttercup for a few months now and he absolutely loves it, he’s never been so confident at a nursery before, he runs in with a big smile on his face every morning. He has made friends and it’s clear the staff care deeply about the children and their jobs. The admin staff are absolutely fantastic - caring, communicative and just lovely. We are so happy we found this nursery - there is absolutely nothing I can fault them on!

Our son has been attending Buttercup Montessori for a couple of months now and the experience has been absolutely wonderful. This is a meticulously well run nursery with staff who really care about each individual child and go above and beyond every single day. Our son has a speech delay and the way the nursery has responded to this in encouraging communication through Makaton, teaching him single words and then heavily praising the words he does use whilst creating an environment where he feels safe and supported has been a joy to behold. He is always excited to go in the morning and disappointed when we come to collect! Our sincere thanks to the team for everything they've done for our son and a special mention to Amber, Katie, Emerald and Jessica who have all worked so hard and provided us with such excellent feedback every time we've come to collect. Thank you Buttercup, my wife, son and I are very grateful for you!

Absolutely fantastic nursery, my son has been attending the last 4 months and he's absolutely flourished in this time. His key worker and teams are fantastic, they really care about the children and their development. The eylog app is fantastic, it shows their daily diary as well as observations which keeps me closer to what my son is up to the whole day. They've also been brilliant helping with his toilet training, I couldn't have asked for a better team/nursery :-)

Our daughter has been attending Buttercup Montessori in Springfield for about 2 years and it has been an absolute pleasure. From office staff to all carers they looked after and cared for our daughter at the beautiful setting the Montessori Springfield nursery provides. The management has been very professional in dealing with any of our enquiries and the staff even more helpful making sure our daughter receives 1st class care which was not only entertainment but also educational. Our daughter has grown from strength to strength and developed her skills while attending the nursery. Would highly recommend this establishment to any parent unsure of where to take their child (ren). Thank you all for your love and care.
