About this day nursery

Canterbury Day Nursery, established in 1974, provides a nurturing and stimulating environment for children aged three months to eleven years. Initially founded to support one-parent families, the nursery now welcomes all families, operating as a charitable organisation managed by a voluntary committee of parents and community members.

The nursery aims to cultivate a 'home from home' atmosphere where children feel valued and can thrive. It offers full day care for infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers, accommodating various age groups in dedicated rooms: 'Ducklings' for babies, 'Caterpillars' for toddlers and under-threes, and 'Butterflies' for pre-school children.

Additionally, the nursery runs 'Monkeys,' an After School Club for reception-year six children and a Holiday Playscheme for school-aged children up to eleven years old. The nursery is committed to enhancing children's education and development through play-based learning and a specially designed curriculum.

It places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, working closely with the Kent Local Offer and other support schemes to cater to individual needs, with a dedicated SENCo team to assist children requiring extra support. The staff, majority qualified, regularly update their credentials, ensuring a high standard of care and education.

The nursery prides itself on fostering positive relationships between children, their key persons, and other adults, providing a diverse range of toys and equipment that encourage physical, social, personal, and intellectual growth.

What parents say

Verbatim quotes recorded in the Ofsted inspection

Staff really do go above and beyond, and they are truly incredible.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

The highly qualified and experienced staff have made significant improvements since their last inspection, including reviewing and improving aspects of the routine to engage all children, including children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Staff support all children, including those with SEND, to develop skills to support their future learning, such as an activity where children can safely throw suitable objects at targets to help them self-regulate emotions.

Outdoor space

Children of all ages develop good physical skills and learn to move in different ways. Younger children confidently and safely use age-appropriate climbing and balancing equipment, such as tunnels, while staff teach older children how to stay safe during more-challenging activities, such as allowing them to climb trees. The inspector viewed the indoor and outdoor learning environments.
