Christ Church Pre-school Playgroup, located in Cheltenham, provides a nurturing Christian environment that welcomes all children from 2 to 4/5 years old. The pre-school emphasises learning through play, fostering a happy and relaxed atmosphere where children are encouraged to explore and develop.
Operating Monday to Friday during term-time, it offers various session options including early morning, morning, afternoon, and all-day sessions, catering to the diverse needs of families. The curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, with a focus on individual child interests to guide learning and future development, using "Development Matters" to track progress.
The pre-school also accepts childcare vouchers and government funding, allowing families to utilise available support. Meals are not provided, with parents asked to pack a healthy cold lunch, but healthy snacks and drinks are offered.
The pre-school was established in 1979 as a community outreach initiative by Christ Church members and is managed by a committee of parents and church representatives, with a dedicated Play Leader overseeing daily operations. All staff are highly qualified, with most holding Early Years Qualifications at Level 3 or above, and undergo continuous professional development, including essential training in first aid and safeguarding.
Christ Church Pre-school is a member of Gloucestershire PATA and is registered with Ofsted.
Our ethos
At Christ Church Pre-school we recognise the importance of learning through play and children are given every opportunity to play in a happy and relaxed atmosphere. Through free play and some adult-provided engagement, we work hard to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage. This is primarily driven by the individual child’s interests, which is used to plan and encourage learning and future development.
What it's like
The pre-school works to provide a safe, caring, nurturing learning environment with a Christian ethos. Children run in excitedly to see staff, showing the good bonds they have with them. Staff patiently offer two-year-olds lots of clear explanations and additional support to help them understand expectations and follow routines. Children begin to enjoy mealtimes with the other children.
The nursery charges per session with options for early morning starts, morning or afternoon sessions, and full-day care. Rates vary within a set price range. Fees are invoiced half-termly.

Inclusion & environment
Staff offer younger children and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) patient explanations to help their understanding. Staff repeat key words clearly, and toddlers copy these, progressing their skills effectively. Managers supervise and support staff, helping them undertake relevant training, such as early years and SEND qualifications, to develop the support provided to children.
Children build their dexterity and coordination effectively. They balance on obstacle courses outside and giggle as they practise their jumping. Pre-school children master putting their coats on to go outside.
I never went near a house of the holy for more than fifty years and now I can't resist popping in whenever I pass one. It seems that the son of god can be likened to a loaf of bread in that 'He is risen' (see below). When I left this church the 'heavens' opened up on me and I got drenched as I thought about what I'd write here. I ain't worried, it was just a coincidence. The wrath of god, so I've heard, is always accompanied by a flash of deadly lightning and deafening thunder. Bring on a plague of frogs 🐸 if ya really wanna give me the heeby jeebies. Again, you've gotta give praise to the builders 👷♂️ 👷♀️ of these structures, you don't get this sort of craftsmanship in modern buildings. He or she who decorates also did a grand job. It's a lot more involved than two coats of magnolia.

Read on GoogleWent to a comedy event at this church. It was clean humour, the guy was brilliant with the kids and Iaughed so much. I was great to have a safe space to hear a bit about God. Everyone from the church was very welcoming.
Read on GoogleA warm welcome and worship to suit all. There has been a return to post service "coffee " after the 1030am service. Also, there is still the quiet reflective 8am Eucharist. The choir led a remarkable return to Choral Evensong at 6 30pm earlier this month.
