Colourbox Montessori School, established in 1992 by Susie Norman, offers a nurturing and stimulating environment across various Suffolk locations, including Bury St Edmunds, using the Montessori approach combined with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. The school focuses on fostering independence, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for learning in young children.
Their environments are designed to encourage exploration, stimulate cognitive development, and support children's growing desire for freedom and independence. Highly experienced staff listen to children's ideas, follow their interests, value their uniqueness, and respect their choices, guiding them to become confident and competent learners.
The school also provides a calm and consistent atmosphere where children can create, play, make friends, and develop individually and as part of a group. Parents have access to a dedicated online zone with essential information regarding their child's attendance and experience.

What it's like
Children arrive enthusiastic and motivated to learn, exploring a wealth of resources that support their individual development. Skilful practitioners extend and embed children's learning, for example, by using a map to show children the countries where birds come from. Children challenge themselves with activities and enthusiastically build on their own learning, such as progressing from pouring large jugs to small funnels.

Parents praise practitioners for how well they support their children. They feel that practitioners are professional and friendly.
Inclusion & environment
All children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make exceptional progress. The special educational needs coordinator is passionate about her role and works closely with parents and other professionals to ensure that every child reaches their full potential. Children have plans in place if they need extra support.
Children have access to a wide range of books, both indoors and outdoors. The inspector observed activities, indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact these have on children's learning. Practitioners talk to children about how they should hold the nursery stick insect and discuss if they will find one in the garden.
Colourbox offers a warm and welcoming environment for children to learn, grow, and play. As a parent, I can confidently say that entrusting my child to the care of the dedicated staff at Colourbox has been one of the best decisions we’ve made.
