YMCA Stepping Stones Nursery, originally established in 1988 as Derwent Stepping Stones, arose from a community need for accessible and affordable childcare in Derby. It was founded by a group of women who faced challenges returning to work due to the lack of suitable childcare options.

Operating as both a Limited Company and a voluntary organisation, the nursery provides flexible childcare and early learning for families in the local area. Located on St Marks Road in Derby, the nursery boasts light and spacious rooms designed to encourage exploration, learning, and development in a creative environment.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are assisted by knowledgeable staff to join in and achieve through carefully planned next steps. Their individual circumstances and needs are swiftly identified, and strategies are put in place to provide them with support. Children are promptly referred to other agencies, such as speech and language therapy services, and the manager ensures they receive assessments and specialist support.

Outdoor space

The inspectors observed the quality of education being provided, indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact that this was having on children's learning.

Truly a really friendly and fun nursery. My daughter has thrived being here, arriving shy and leaving full of confidence. She's made lovely friends and the staff are so kind and compassionate. I'd highly recommend this nursery to anyone.

All 3 of my children have attached this nursery and the staff are woundful my children all have autism which this nursery is woundful at support there needs
