Earleybird Pre-School, established in 1987, is situated within the Hawkedon School grounds in Lower Earley, Reading. Operating Monday to Friday during term-time from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the pre-school accommodates children from the term they turn three up to five years old.
It boasts two dedicated rooms, each equipped with children's toilets and food preparation areas, complemented by generous outdoor spaces for play and exploration. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to foster approved learning outcomes, with a strong emphasis on individual care, facilitated by a high ratio of adults to children.
Active parent involvement is encouraged, offering families the chance to participate in group activities and track their child’s development. As a voluntary committee-run establishment, Earleybird Pre-School offers both universal and working parent funded places, and supported places for eligible families.
The pre-school also encourages the wearing of a uniform consisting of a red jumper or cardigan, a red or white polo shirt, and black or grey bottoms or red/white summer dresses, aiming to foster a sense of belonging among all children.

Inclusion & environment
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well. The manager uses additional funding to provide one-to-one time with staff. Children with SEND are given high levels of attention and the support they need. The manager works closely with the special educational needs coordinator, other professionals and parents. Together, they put targeted plans in place to help children with SEND to progress in their development.
In the garden, children walk across wooden planks and hold out their arms to balance. Younger children hold on to a member of staff's hand for support when necessary. Children benefit from regular physical activity, for example through weekly visits from a football coach.
