About this day nursery

First Steps Day Nursery, established in 1991, provides childcare for children aged 1 to 4 years. Open weekdays from 7am to 6pm, except for Christmas and bank holidays, the nursery provides a warm and secure environment where children arrive happy and excited for their day.

The dedicated staff team fosters secure attachments, knowing each child well and being attentive to their individual needs. The curriculum is rich, varied, and exciting, capturing children's attention across all age groups.

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are closely supported by leaders and staff, including a dedicated SENCo, who work with other professionals to ensure children achieve their potential and are well-prepared for school. Parents of children with SEND highly commend the support received.

Children are encouraged to be independent from an early age, learning to use utensils, confidently navigating learning environments, and dressing themselves for outdoor play after regular risk assessments to ensure safety. The nursery maintains strong partnerships with parents, who value the good communication regarding their children's care, learning, and development, and feel included and valued.

The nursery received an overall "Good" rating from Ofsted on December 1, 2022.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and children who need additional help are closely supported. Leaders and staff, such as the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo), give high priority to working with other professionals. They identify and carry out interventions to enable children to achieve their potential and be well prepared for their move on to school. Parents of children with SEND speak highly of the support they have received from the SENCo.

Outdoor space

Children confidently navigate their way around the learning environments and select the resources that they need. They put on their own coats for outdoor play and attempt to do up their zips and buttons by themselves. Leaders and staff ensure that children play in a safe and secure environment, indoors and outdoors, through regular risk assessments.
