First Steps Nursery in Skipton, North Yorkshire, registered with Ofsted in 2004, provides childcare for children aged 0-4 years. 30am to 6pm, all year round (excluding bank holidays and one week at Christmas), the nursery has a capacity for 64 children.
" The nursery excels in supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), offering timely referrals, excellent intervention strategies, and dedicated key staff. These children benefit from one-to-one support and small-group activities in a designated intervention space, focusing on social, communication, and attention skills.
The nursery also promotes physical development through activities like playing with wheeled toys and balancing planks in the outdoor area. Leaders have improved the curriculum for children under three since the last inspection, and staff effectively use assessment to check children's learning, supporting their progress as they prepare for school.
What it's like
Staff plan broad and effective educational programmes for children aged over three years which helps some children make good progress. However, the provider does not support staff to plan for younger children's curriculum and does not deploy staff or use resources well enough to fully promote younger children's care, learning, and developmental needs. Children receive a warm greeting and are at ease with staff, fostering emotional well-being and confidence as they develop physical and social skills.
Fees require a two-week deposit upon registration, which is refundable when the child leaves. A two-week notice period is required to withdraw a child, otherwise the deposit is forfeited. Deposits are also non-refundable if a booked place is cancelled within three months of the start date.

Inclusion & environment
Staff swiftly identify children working below expectations and support them through timely referrals and excellent intervention strategies. Key staff are specifically employed to oversee provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and there is a designated intervention space. Children, including those with specific funding, benefit immensely from one-to-one support and small-group activities that build on children's social, communication and attention skills.
Children develop their large physical skills. For example, staff provide a variety of wheeled toys for children to manoeuvre around the outdoor area. As children learn to balance while walking across a plank, staff hold their hands to build up their confidence.
