About this day nursery

Portland Nurseries, established in 1991, is a family-operated group of day nurseries dedicated to providing exceptional early years care and education. The nurseries aim to foster each child's full potential through a curriculum led by highly qualified early years teachers.

They emphasise a natural learning environment, with children engaging in outdoor play daily, regardless of the weather. This approach incorporates elements of Forest School education, encouraging exploration, problem-solving, and a connection with nature.

Healthy eating is a core value, with nutritious meals prepared fresh in nursery kitchens using locally sourced ingredients, catering to various dietary needs. The nurseries are committed to inclusivity, supporting children with additional needs through trained Special Educational Needs Coordinators.

They also prioritise environmental responsibility, educating children on sustainable practices and holding the National Eco Green Flag Award. The team consists of skilled and dedicated staff, many with advanced qualifications and extensive experience, regularly trained in-house and through national programmes.

The nurseries foster strong parent partnerships through events and open communication, utilising a digital journal called "Parent Zone" to track children's progress and share updates.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Staff have high ambitions for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They work in partnership with parents and outside agencies to support children in making good progress. The nursery uses funding to ensure that children receive individual support from staff.

Outdoor space

Children choose to spend most of their time in the stimulating outdoor area. Staff plan exciting activities to extend children's learning, such as cooperating to make a large nest using sticks and exploring an empty eggshell found in the forest area.
