Hatherleigh Pre-School, established in 2017, provides childcare for children aged 2 to 4 years. 30am to 3pm during term time, with additional care on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the summer holidays.

Children are happy and settle quickly, with staff providing engaging activities that help them feel secure. The pre-school encourages independent choices in play, both indoors and outdoors, and children demonstrate good behaviour and enjoy physical activity.

The setting was rated as Good by Ofsted on its latest inspection on 10th June 2021. The management team at Hatherleigh Pre-School is committed to continuous improvement, regularly reflecting on their practice and holding supervision meetings with staff to enhance children's development.

Staff actively support children in managing their emotions, with a newly developed garden area providing a space for children to express their feelings, such as finding joy in the flowers. The pre-school has effective partnerships with parents, providing daily updates and "to and fro" books, as well as targeted care plans for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

These plans offer parents information on how to support their child's individual needs, and staff work diligently to improve communication and social skills. The pre-school also collaborates closely with other professionals to ensure a smooth transition for children moving on to primary school.

Staff are passionate about outdoor learning, providing opportunities for children to connect with nature, learn about plant growth, and even re-pot saplings.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Targeted care plans are provided to parents with information on how to meet their child's individual needs. Staff work hard to improve children's communication and social skills.

Outdoor space

Children make independent choices in their play, choosing from a selection of activities both inside and outdoors. Children enjoy being active outside, throwing balls at a target or tossing sponges into a bucket. They also talk about how the newly developed garden area makes them feel, stating "The flowers make me happy". Staff are passionate in providing all children with opportunities to be at one with nature, learning how plants grow and how to re-pot saplings.
