About this day nursery

Kids Planet Gateshead, a childcare facility for children aged 0-4 years, has been operating since 2025 and received an 'Expected standard' rating in its latest Ofsted inspection on March 24, 2026. The nursery prioritises a nurturing environment where children build positive relationships and secure attachments with staff, ensuring children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and newcomers receive extra support to settle in.

The setting follows the Reggio Emilia curriculum, offering varied planned play opportunities both indoors and across its two outdoor play areas, fostering imagination and key developmental skills. While overall support for children with SEND is generally effective, the nursery is actively working to enhance consistency in this area.

Leaders are dedicated to ongoing professional development for staff and engage with external professionals to meet individual children's needs, offering advice to parents on supporting learning at home and preparing children for school transitions.

What it's like

Children arrive happy and are warmly greeted by staff. They enjoy familiar routines, such as starting the day with a "wake up, shake up" session. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, or children new to the setting, are given extra support and cuddles to help them settle. Children engage well in a varied range of planned play opportunities that support their learning and development, both indoors and outdoors.

What it's like to attend

Children arrive happy and are warmly greeted by staff. They enjoy familiar routines, such as starting the day with a "wake up, shake up" session. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, or children new to the setting, are given extra support and cuddles to help them settle. Children engage well in a varied range of planned play opportunities that support their learning and development, both indoors and outdoors.

Inspector highlights

  • Children develop confidence in their social and physical development and generally achieve well across the curriculum.
  • Babies have opportunities to develop muscle strength, balance and coordination as they practise standing, reaching and throwing.
  • Children develop early mathematical skills throughout the day, such as when singing number songs and rhymes.
  • Adapted activities ensure all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, are included.
  • Staff ensure a nurturing environment that supports children to build positive relationships and form secure attachments.
  • Children are engaged and interested in their learning, exploring the world around them and building early mathematical understanding.

Areas to develop

  • 1Leaders should carefully consider the environment and timetable when planning children's learning and activities, for example, to more effectively support children's communication and language skills at busier and noisier times.
  • 2Leaders should build on strategies to evaluate staff practice more effectively, including the level of support that staff provide to children.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Leaders and staff generally support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) appropriately. They work with parents and other professionals to identify children's needs and put suitable strategies in place. Overall, support for children with SEND is generally effective, although it is not yet fully consistent.

Outdoor space

Children enjoy access to 2 separate outdoor play areas. They have opportunities to choose where to play, including indoors or outdoors. They use their imagination well when making food for caterpillars in the mud kitchen. Children's language and communication and their thinking skills are also promoted when they talk about what they are doing and making.

We couldn't be happier with Leigh's gateshead nursery! Our daughter has been attending since 9 months and settled immediately. We get clear communication including photo and developmental updates and she gets additional toddler yoga which she absolutely loves. She's excited to go to nursery everyday and the staff are amazing! It's such a relief to send her somewhere safe and loving while we are at work. Her social skills and vocabulary have flourished too!

My little one started at Leigh's Nursery (Gateshead) when he was just 6 months old. I am pleased we chose Leigh's Nursery even though it was a tough decision to make. He's now grown into an adorable 14-month-old who enjoys being at nursery. The warm welcome we receive at the door every day, the lovely crafts he brings home, the beautiful pictures of his day at nursery and his milestones on learning book are so incredible to see. It's always nice to see him eager to get to nursery in the morning and after nursery with a big smile. Liaising with staff to get a good nap time routine for him to help improve sleep at night was a life saver. We truly appreciate all the amazing staff at Leigh's Nursery (Gateshead). Continue to be outstanding!

Our daughter started at Leigh’s when she was just over five months old, a huge (and very scary) part of our journey as new parents, it was not easy but from day one we have been blown away by the truly outstanding care our daughter has received. The staff are friendly, caring and professional. Our daughter loves her time at nursery and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you! .

They were absolutely fab ensured he had the best day and I was not worried at all! I received stunning pictures on blossom which made me and my partner feel at ease while he was in the nursery! We viewed different nurseries but this one we definitely got the feel it had a great energy about it too! I actually attended this nursery and my sisters when we were younger although it has been taken over it is a wonderful nursery! The best decision we made. Our little one has come on leaps and bounds since starting, she can’t talk yet but she doesn’t stop babbling away on the way home (telling us about her day). The team are all fantastic and lovely!! I never feel like anything is a problem and they are so helpful and feel they work with us as a family (naps, feeding etc). Thank you so much!
