Little Forest Folk Winkworth is a forest nursery located within the 95-acre National Trust Winkworth Arboretum in Godalming, Surrey. This nursery, which opened in January 2025, builds upon its ten years of experience in running fully outdoor forest nurseries, aiming to provide children with ample opportunities to engage with nature.

The nursery caters to children from 18 months, following a 'forest readiness' assessment, and offers full-day sessions from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, 51 weeks a year, with a minimum attendance requirement of two days per week. Children begin their day in a converted cottage that serves as an indoor space and enjoy a nutritious breakfast before venturing outdoors.

The curriculum focuses on outdoor play, including treasure hunts, den building, tree climbing, tool work, and fire safety, alongside creative play, storytelling, and forest mathematics. Meals and snacks are provided throughout the day, both in the forest and back at the cottage, where children reflect on their daily adventures.

The nursery maintains a low staff-to-child ratio of 1:4.

Pricing & funding

Charges are based on a daily rate for all-year-round care operating 51 weeks of the year. Monthly fees are scaled according to the number of days attended per week. Government-funded sessions are subject to additional charges to cover food, consumables, and activities.

An amazing forest school! The staff are really lovely and attentive and make sure there's always different activities for the children to engage with. Being at Winkworth means the setting is so special and the children make full use of it, going on adventure walks and learning about the world around them. My son loves going each day and always talks really positively about his time there. For anyone looking for a forest school, I would highly recommend this one!

I can't recommend this forest nursery enough! From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this is a magical place where nature and imagination thrive. The educators foster an environment where children are encouraged to explore, create, and learn in the most natural way. Every day feels like an adventure as the little ones get to explore the arboretum, discovering new plants, animals, and hidden treasures. I was initially worried about how my daughter would cope with being outside in all weather, but she absolutely loves it! The team at the nursery ensures that every child is comfortable and well-equipped for all seasons. Plus, they have a cosy cottage where the kids can retreat to when they need a little break from the elements, which really puts my mind at ease. The team at this nursery are passionate, attentive, and deeply committed to providing a nurturing, nature-rich environment. If you want your child to grow, play, and learn in an incredible natural setting, this is the place!

This is so much more than a nursery for my little boy. He absolutely loves it, has wonderful varied experiences there every week, loves the staff and the food is wholesome and delicious too. He talks about his time at forest school when he comes home and always has great stories to tell.
