About this day nursery

Nunthorpe Children's Day Nursery, located in Middlesbrough, has been providing childcare on non-domestic premises since 2001, catering to children aged 0-5 years. The nursery operates year-round, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 6 pm, excluding bank holidays.

While the latest Ofsted inspection in March 2026 identified some areas for urgent improvement, the report highlights that the setting effectively meets safeguarding standards and its curriculum approach, based on the EYFS, has positively impacted children's learning. Children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) are well-supported, with staff working closely with families and professionals to meet individual needs, leading to good progress.

The nursery fosters a warm and caring environment where staff are positive role models, encouraging communication and language development. Despite an incident of unsupervised children due to inconsistencies in transition procedures, children are generally settled and enthusiastic.

The nursery also promotes healthy choices, including freshly cooked meals and daily outdoor exercise. The leadership team is proactive in addressing areas for improvement and supports staff well-being.

Our ethos

The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, with a focus on tailoring activities to individual learning needs through a key person system. They aim to foster an environment for learning and imaginative play, committed to providing an excellent start in life for children.

What it's like

Children are not supervised effectively in the nursery and there are inconsistencies in staff's implementation of the nursery's transition procedures, leading to an incident where a child was unknowingly left unsupervised. Despite this, children are settled and enthusiastic, behaving well with kind and caring staff who meet their individual needs. Since the last inspection, improvements in curriculum have positively impacted children's learning, preparing them for future stages.

Mariam has attended this nursery just after turning one (and is nearly 4 now). She has come on so much during her time at nursery, and this is in particular down to all the staff, who care so much about all the kids. They all really do go above and beyond to make sure each individual child is supported and feels loved. The organisation is fantastic, considering how challenging it can be. They are always willing to accommodate last minute extra days where there is space. During nursery they put on lots of activities for the kids that you really wouldn’t expect them to do. Mariam loves it when they have trips out and learns a lot. The nursery is always organising training days for the staff which shows they are always trying to improve. We couldn’t recommend this nursery enough. The only downside is I think my daughter prefers some of the staff over me!
