Oldbury Busy Bees Playgroup is a unique preschool and playgroup situated in Oldbury-on-Severn, a short distance from Thornbury. Open during term time, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm, the playgroup caters to children aged 2-5 years.

The nursery prides itself on fostering a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where learning and development are primarily achieved through play. They integrate child-led activities with adult-led initiatives, covering a diverse range of topics aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS).

A significant emphasis is placed on outdoor play in their secure garden and exploring the local countryside, including walks to the River Severn. Inside, children have access to spacious areas for various play types, encouraging independent learning and messy exploration.

The curriculum focuses on personal, social, and emotional development, alongside communication and language skills, which are considered foundational for building independence, confidence, self-esteem, and motivation to learn. The playgroup also incorporates yoga and uses child-friendly gym equipment to promote healthy lifestyles.

As a non-profit organisation, it is run by a dedicated management committee comprising parents, carers, and community members, and is registered with OFSTED and the Early Years Alliance, as well as the local authority for Nursery Grant receipt. They welcome parental involvement in fundraising and committee activities.

Our ethos

We provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment where your child can learn and develop through play. We use a mixture of child led play and adult led activities covering a broad range of topics and themes whilst working towards the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). We emphasise personal, social and emotional development along with communication and language skills as a starting point for all learning. We believe that these developmental areas are the foundation for a child acquiring independence, confidence, self-esteem and the motivation to learn. But to most of all have FUN!

What it's like

Children are excited to attend the playgroup and settle very quickly. Staff promptly identified that some children were less settled due to COVID-19 and find out about children's new interests to provide enjoyable activities. The playgroup encourages children to lead their play, with staff skilfully following interests to progress development.
