About this early years setting

Queens Park Montessori Day Nursery, located in Charminster, Bournemouth, has been providing childcare for 30 years. Owned and managed by Alison Toms since 2002, the nursery prides itself on its dedicated team of qualified staff who prioritise ongoing training to create a secure and nurturing environment.

The nursery caters to children aged 4 months to 5 years, offering 29 places. m.

, within a large detached property with off-road parking. The curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, focusing on seven areas of learning and development: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

Detailed observations are made for each child, considering the Characteristics of Effective Learning and the four EYFS Principles: A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments, and Learning and Development. The nursery has distinct groups for different age ranges: the Baby room (4 months to 2 years) with a maximum of 9 babies and 3 staff members, the Conservatory group (2 to 3 years) with a maximum of 8 children and 2 staff members, and the Montessori room (3 to 4 years) with three experienced and qualified staff.

The Montessori room offers a blend of Montessori ethos and other childcare practices, covering all seven EYFS areas. The nursery, unfortunately, will be closing permanently on August 31, 2026, due to financial pressures and is currently full until its closure.

Queens Park Montessori Day Nursery provides a blend of the Montessori ethos and other childcare practices to provide a balanced curriculum for the children in line with government regulations. They aim to create a secure and loving environment, within which each child is treated as an individual and is helped to develop to their full potential.

How they support every child

SEND provision

The special educational needs and/or disabilities coordinator is proactive in training staff to identify and support children who need additional help with their learning. She works with parents and external agencies to ensure children with special educational needs and/or disabilities make the best possible progress.

Outdoor space

Children enjoy fresh air and exercise and develop their large motor skills outside. They ably run, climb and kick balls.

EAL / language support

Staff use visual cards to help children who speak English as an additional language to understand what is happening next. However, there are few opportunities for children to develop and use their home language in their play, to support their language development and sense of belonging.

My son attended Queens Park Montessori from the age of 20 months to 4 years old. I can’t recommend this nursery enough. They have been amazing with him, I have no doubt his development is down to them. All of the staff are so friendly, caring and supportive. They keep you well informed of what your child has been up to. They are also open all year except for the Christmas period and bank holidays which helped me massively as I know quite a few childcare settings are term time only. They even provide all the meals and snacks throughout the day which was one less thing for me to do. Thank you so much Alison and team 🙂

My daughter is attending Queens Park Montessori since October 2022 and has absolutely loved it. The positive and heartfelt welcome we receive every day she attends sets the scene for a happy day at nursery. The staff are extremely caring; they take a genuine interest in each child and can provide a detailed account of every day. The management have been very helpful and great with communication. It is such a lovely environment for the children to learn through play. The online portal allows for easy summaries of each day and also includes some photos and progress reports. We are extremely impressed and very happy with Queens Park Montessori.

A wonderful nursery. The staff enthusiasm for the children shines through and leads to our boy enjoying his time thoroughly. After visiting a number of nurseries prior to finding the right one I am sure we selected well - have never had a bad experience after 2 years. Great team rapport is apparent which is always reassuring. A very positive environment to entrust a precious child.

If you are a CACHE student and wishing to carry out your experiential practice here then I strongly advise you do not! I left this setting after a week, the staff were very disrespectful and did not allow me to meet any of my CACHE standards. They told me off for talking to children and continuously told me that my attire was unacceptable (a t shirt and leggings). They were fairly good with the children they had in their care, however they were extremely unprofessional towards myself.
