About this day nursery

Rusper Playgroup is a welcoming and inclusive early years setting located in Rusper Village Hall, adjacent to the local primary school. Established over three decades ago, the playgroup provides a secure and nurturing environment where children can joyfully learn, grow, and build new friendships.

The playgroup operates during term time on weekdays, offering sessions from 9 am to 3 pm, with options for an earlier start at 8:30 am and a later finish at 3:30 pm. Children are eligible to join the playgroup from the term preceding their second birthday, with the flexibility to attend full-time or gradually increase their sessions as they prepare for school.

As a committee-run charity, the playgroup benefits from the active involvement of community members, as well as current and former parents and carers who oversee financial matters and fundraising initiatives. The dedicated staff are responsible for providing high-quality care and delivering a curriculum-based activity programme.

The collaborative relationship between staff and the committee underscores the playgroup's commitment to parental involvement, fostering a strong sense of community and shared responsibility for the children's development.

What parents say

Verbatim quotes recorded in the Ofsted inspection

"If I am hot and stressed, I need to drink water and have a rest."

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive precise, targeted intervention. The manager ensures inclusion funding provides additional support to implement strategies to help children with SEND make good progress. Furthermore, staff receive additional training to help improve their knowledge of SEND, which has a positive impact on their practice to benefit children.

Outdoor space

Staff make good use of the play spaces available to children. They set up a large hall with a variety of play equipment and activities that promote children's physical skills. This allows children to practise moving their bodies in different ways, developing their dexterity and spatial awareness.

EAL / language support

Staff work in partnership with parents whose children speak English as an additional language. Staff ensure children settle into the playgroup by having recorded messages to listen to in their home language. However, they have yet to fully explore how they reduce the barriers to communication so that children can build on their language skills effectively. Despite this, children are happy, engage well and seek other ways to express themselves.

Our son has been attending Rusper Playgroup since April 2021 and he absolutely loves it. With the wide variety of activities no two days are the same, whether its a walk through the village, a visit from the emergency services, a trip to the church, thoughtful artwork for special occasions (eg Mothers day/ Fathers day, a visit to the forest school etc, he always comes home beaming telling us about his day. The staff have encouraged his speech and confidence, both of which have improved significantly. I cant thank the wonderful ladies for everything they have helped us with, for setting him up for Primary School. Highly recommended!

Our little girl has been going to Rusper playgroup since Sept 2022. I cannot recommend this playgroup highly enough. we have seen such an improvement in her confidence and she absolutely loves going! The team here are wonderful. All well trained childcare individuals and experienced mothers. The care and attention that they give the children is amazing. They really take time to get to know your childs personality and what they need. Our little girl has blossomed here. When dropping her off in the mornings she races through the door and cannot wait to go in, which to us speaks volumes. They take the time with the children and engage them in not only academic learning but also a weekly forest school where they learn about the outdoors and team work and much more!

Lovely playgroup with brilliant staff. The staff know the children individually which is so lovely. My little one has become so much more confident and has learnt so much from being at the playgroup for the past 2 years. Will definitely be sending my son once he is at the correct age. Highly recommend!
