About this day nursery

Westwood Smarties, established in 2008, operates as a childcare setting on non-domestic premises in MANCHESTER, M30 8DN. Rated 'Good' by Ofsted on 19th June 2025, the nursery provides a home-from-home experience for children aged 2 to 4 years during term-time, from Monday to Friday, 9:20 am to 2:45 pm.

The nursery offers an ambitious, broad, and inclusive curriculum tailored to children's individual needs and interests. Staff are nurturing and understand children's preferences and routines well, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Children with SEND benefit from individual plans and make good progress, with some utilising the sensory room before class to aid emotional well-being. Communication and language development is a strength, with staff engaging children in back-and-forth conversations and utilising gestures for non-verbal communicators.

Independence is highly promoted, with children confidently managing self-care tasks. While most areas of the curriculum are well-promoted, the report notes that literacy development, especially in the outdoor area, could be enhanced to further support children who learn best in that environment.

Mathematical development is also well-supported through engaging activities and the introduction of mathematical language. Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with a positive culture that prioritises children's interests.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Staff are nurturing and get to know children well, particularly those children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Staff recognise that some children benefit from time in the sensory room before they enter the classroom and adapt their routine accordingly. Children with SEND benefit from individual plans to prevent gaps widening while they wait for outside input. They are very well settled at the nursery and make good progress from their starting points.

Outdoor space

The curriculum for literacy development is not promoted as well as the other areas of learning, particularly in the outdoor area. This does not help some children to develop their literacy skills in the environment that they learn best. The inspector observed the quality of education being provided, indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact that this was having on children's learning.
