Abacus Children's Day Nursery is a highly-rated, privately-owned childcare provider based in Taunton, dedicated to fostering the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of children from three months up to school age. The nursery prides itself on its 'Outstanding' Ofsted judgement in all areas, achieved in November 2022, reflecting its commitment to high standards of care and education.
With a team of up to 15 qualified and experienced staff who share a genuine passion for early years, Abacus goes beyond basic childcare by offering a rich and varied experience through activities such as sports sessions, yoga, mindfulness, and Forest School. They also welcome external agencies like 'Mini Footy' and 'Music Bugs' to enhance children's learning.
The nursery operates with a strong inclusion and equality policy, ensuring all children have opportunities to thrive, and holds the 'Dingley's Promise Mark of Achievement' for its dedication to inclusive practice for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Abacus values strong partnerships with parents, keeping them informed through various channels, and prioritises safeguarding as central to their care.
They utilise Tapestry, an online learning journey system, to facilitate home-nursery communication and track children's progress. The nursery embraces a 'Learning Through Play' ethos, providing a stimulating, safe environment where children can develop their unique selves, offering both child-initiated and adult-led play opportunities to foster a love for learning.
Additionally, Abacus incorporates the 'Hygge' philosophy with a calm 'Snug' room that offers natural, open-ended play experiences, aligning with 'The Curiosity Approach'.
Our ethos
We aim to provide a caring, safe and stimulating environment where children can play and learn. Where each child can be embraced and encouraged to develop their own unique self. We offer a variety of resources but understand that children learn best through play and interaction, so no opportunity is wasted! We believe that safeguarding each child whilst at nursery is at the centre of our care. We ensure that all the staff have undergone safeguarding training. Our Manager and Deputy are both fully trained in safeguarding. Our Mission: To provide, a ‘home from home’ environment where children’s needs come first. Staff work in partnership with parents/carers and outside agencies (when required) to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential, in fun and safe surroundings.

Inclusion & environment
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported to reach their full potential; staff have an exceptional understanding of their learning and physical needs and monitor progress closely, initiating rapid referrals to obtain interventions when necessary.
Children develop excellent physical skills using outdoor areas and equipment: babies navigate winding pathways and step up and down, toddlers use balancing equipment outside, and older children pedal wheeled toys on paved areas and climb on static tyres in the safety surface; they also use real tools in the woodwork shed.
Very disappointed by this nursery. Several reasons for this rating, but the main issues we encountered were staff not respecting our wishes with how to feed our child. Repeated attempts to explain our wishes, no joy. Also felt like the hygiene levels aren't to a high enough standard for very young children. Staff change rooms too much so there's no relationship or trust to build on. One thing I will say, the food Miss Simone cooks is excellent, she is a credit to the business. If only everything else was to her standard. There are definitely other options in Carlisle, if you have a young child under 1.
