Ashbourne Day Nurseries at Cheshunt offers a generally calm and caring environment where children from 0 to 4 years old are welcomed. Staff are committed to positive relationships with families, taking time to gather updates from parents for unsettled children and providing reassurance and support during transitions like potty training.
While a curriculum is planned, the inspection noted that the quality of education is variable, with learning opportunities not always consistently sequenced or age-appropriate. Despite this, staff build warm and nurturing relationships with children, understanding their interests and responding well to their care and emotional needs.
Babies are gently supported through sleep and play transitions and encouraged to self-feed. Staff model positive behaviour to help children learn sharing and turn-taking.
Significant changes in management have led to a focus on establishing robust procedures to support staff and improve areas of the nursery. Partnerships with parents are developing through daily handovers, an online platform, and inclusive events.
Initiatives like a lending library promote early literacy at home. The nursery provides a spacious outdoor environment that supports physical development, although the outdoor resources for younger children are not consistently enriching.
Staff deliver purposeful activities for older children on oral health and effectively prepare children for the next stage of education through discussions, school uniform introductions, and visits from local teachers, as well as detailed transition reports. Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with an open and positive culture prioritising children's interests.
The overall effectiveness of Ashbourne Day Nurseries at Cheshunt is rated as 'Requires Improvement'.

Inclusion & environment
The outdoor provision offers a spacious environment that supports children's physical development through climbing, running, and use of large equipment. Children show enthusiasm for natural exploration and gross motor activities, such as crawling through tunnels and rolling hoops. However, the outdoor area lacks a consistent range of enriching learning opportunities, particularly for younger children, and resources are not always age appropriate for babies, limiting the inclusivity and effectiveness of outdoor learning.
My daughter really struggled at the beginning of her nursery journey as she had never been left with anyone other than my mum. She has loved being with the kind and supportive staff at Ashbourne. The team are brilliant, communicate so transparently and act always with kindness. The outdoor space is incredible and Terry the cook whips up wonderful meals for the kids. Everyone truly cares for the children they look after and the kids have such close bonds in their rooms and even other rooms as they integrate it's lovely to see on the open days with the staff. Thank you for everything you do for us and our babies!
Read on GoogleWe are so grateful to the team at Ashbourne. Our son joined the nursery at 10 months old and has now been there for a year and the staff have been fantastic. I was very worried about how he would settle in being so young, but he is so supported - he now runs in every morning! Since starting his development has come on leaps and bounds, and the staff are always supportive of any concerns we may have about it. The communication we have via the app is brilliant, and the photos of him playing with the themed activities they create for the children are a highlight in my day. It’s so comforting to know he is cared for so well when away from us. I cannot recommend Ashbourne enough, thank you for all you do
Read on GoogleA lovely nursery, we have two daughters, one now goes to school but both went to Ashbourne. We used to go to another premium nursery, but this one is miles better, the food, resources and staff are brilliant. They even have their own dedicated Arts/craft room! Don't take my word for it, go and view the nursery, it's brilliant!
