Inclusion & environment
All children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), develop confidence in their own abilities. Support for children with SEND is a key strength of the setting. Staff are creative in their approach to helping children, having created bespoke 'calming bags' to assist children when they are anxious and collaborating with other professionals to ensure children get the right support. Consequently, the setting is helping to narrow the gap in children's development.
Older children thoroughly enjoy playing outdoors. They are keen to explore and see what they can find. They proudly show staff their treasures which are treated with reverence. Forest school activities provide opportunities for the children to engage with the world around them.
My granddaughter did not thrive here as a SEND child. We were told she would never go to mainstream school at 3years old by her nursery worker because she "couldn't follow instructions". As a non-verbal child she was separated from verbal children and thereafter we watched her become unhappy going to nursery. After changing nursery where SEND were not separated, she began to thrive. The nursery instantly recognised her "as a very clever child" who loves numbers and letters. This had not been spotted previously. One year on and she is at mainstream and doing very well - where the support is amazing. She is developing her speech and doing exceptional in her learning in comparison to her peers, while her communication is improving. She has had no problems transitioning from nursery to school, and looks forward to after-school club. Her peers are amazing, too, always wanting to join her in - a reflection of the inclusive environment. I feel its been important to do this review because we now have hope whereas Barton Moss took this away. Lesson learned is to never write off an early years child!
