What it's like to attend

Children are happy and confident at Buttercross Pre-School, separating easily from parents. They follow daily routines, such as washing hands before group time, showing they feel safe and secure. Children are curious explorers, learning about herbs in the garden and using their imagination during imaginative play.

Inspector highlights

  • The manager and staff support children to develop skills in preparation for their move on to school.
  • Staff give children plenty of praise and encouragement, including 'high fives' and 'well done', to raise self-esteem.
  • Staff observe and assess children's learning, planning the environment and spending time to build on existing knowledge, such as developing mathematical skills through water play.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well. The manager uses additional funding to provide one-to-one time with staff. Children with SEND are given high levels of attention and the support they need. The manager works closely with other professionals and parents, putting targeted plans in place to help children with SEND to progress in their development.

Outdoor space

Children put on their coats to play outdoors. They pick herbs from the garden and are encouraged to compare leaves with different shapes. In the garden, children walk across wooden planks and hold out their arms to balance. Younger children hold on to a member of staff's hand for support when necessary.
