Verbatim quotes recorded in the Ofsted inspection
They particularly comment on the care and support that staff provide for children who have medical needs.
Inclusion & environment
The manager makes sure that the nursery is inclusive and welcomes all children. Staff implement effective and individualised care plans for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. They liaise with external professionals, such as portage workers and speech and language therapists, to support children further, and use additional funding to support children at the times that they need it.
Children enjoy many opportunities to play in the vast outdoor areas. When children explore woodland areas, they delight in looking for butterflies. Older children practise jumping, skipping, running and rolling hoops.
Our daughter attended Castle View Nursery in Chester-le-Street briefly in 2025. While the setting appears professional, our experience raised serious concerns about supervision and safeguarding. We received a phone call saying “something had happened” but staff were unsure what and reassured us it was nothing to worry about. When we arrived, our daughter was distressed and had sustained multiple bite and scratch injuries. The nursery’s own incident form states staff were “not sure what happened” and only became aware after hearing her cry, confirming she was not under direct supervision at the time. We later learned that similar biting incidents involving the same child had previously been recorded and that additional 1:1 supervision was being sought but was not yet in place. We understand that young children can bite; however, where risks are known, effective supervision is essential. Based on the nursery’s own records, this was not in place when our daughter was injured. What we found most disappointing was the management response, which felt defensive rather than supportive following a distressing incident. The impact on our daughter continued well beyond the day itself, including ongoing distress and disrupted sleep that had not been present before. We also noted the nursery continues to advertise an “Outstanding” rating despite its most recent Ofsted inspection (2021) grading the setting as “Good.” We hope sharing this experience encourages reflection and improved safeguarding for other families.
Read on GoogleFantastic nursery. We visited all of the local options before making our choice and this was the one where we felt most comfortable and confident. At the time of comparison, we found it to be more expensive than others in the area but not by a significant margin - they are all in the same ballpark. Our daughter has attended for over a year now, loves going there and impresses us daily with her developing intelligence, personality and behaviour. Would not hesitate to recommend. Covers the full age range, offers appropriate hours and doesn't close in school holidays like some other nurseries.
Read on GoogleDidn't think I'd see a place where I'd be happy to see my precious little granddaughter left at, but this place seems great and the staff seem so enthusiastic, caring and professional. A*
