Selby Cottage Childcare Centre, located in Chester-le-Street, is an outstanding childcare setting that registered in 2012. The centre operates from 8am to 6pm Monday to Thursday and from 8am to 5:30pm on Fridays, all year round, accommodating children from nine months to eleven years old.
The highly skilled and passionate staff, 14 of whom hold at least a level 3 early years qualification, create a nurturing and engaging environment where children flourish and develop strong bonds. The centre provides an exceptional range of opportunities, both indoors and in their extensive outdoor areas, encouraging creative and critical thinking.
They actively support children's communication and language development through high-quality interactions and carefully selected books. The curriculum is ambitious and expertly planned, ensuring children develop the necessary skills and knowledge for their next stage of learning.
Moreover, children benefit from extensive outdoor experiences, including exploring a mud kitchen and learning about nature. The setting also fosters an inclusive community atmosphere, with children visiting local swimming baths, forest school, allotments, and even aged miners' homes and the community centre, promoting a broad understanding of diversity and the world around them.

Inclusion & environment
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive excellent support. Staff ensure swift referrals are made, and support plans are of high quality. They work effectively with professionals such as health visitors, speech and language therapists, and the local authority.
Children benefit greatly from extensive outdoor experiences, including exploring the mud kitchen, dissecting flowers, planting vegetables, and looking for bugs in the trees. They also learn to keep safe around a campfire and light fires with staff support.
