Church Walk Pre-school Nursery in Ulverston provides a supportive and nurturing environment where children can thrive, learn, and develop. Established in 1972 as Church Walk Playgroup and re-established as a Pre-school in 1997, it became an incorporated entity in 2005.
The nursery is managed by a dedicated committee of parents and volunteers, reflecting its community-focused, charity-run nature. It operates on a term-time basis, offering both a Breakfast Club and After School Club for its nursery children and pupils from Church Walk CofE Primary School.
The nursery prides itself on delivering high-quality early years education and care, working in collaboration with parents to foster children's learning and development. With a strong commitment to inclusivity, Church Walk Pre-school Nursery welcomes all children, promoting equality regardless of background or ability.
The nursery maintains a low adult-to-child ratio, with 1:5 for under-threes and 1:8 for over-threes, ensuring personalised attention. Each child is assigned a Key Person who tracks their development using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and maintains regular communication with parents through both informal discussions and formal interviews held twice a year.
The setting creates a stimulating and secure atmosphere, supporting children's emotional and educational growth, as evidenced by its "outstanding" Ofsted rating in October 2023.

Inclusion & environment
The robust key-person system helps staff to know individual children very well. This works particularly well for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Staff swiftly identify when children are at risk of falling behind in their development and know just how to meet every child's individual needs. Staff work closely with parents and other professionals to implement specific plans to promote children's progress and to ensure they get any additional help they need to keep up.
Staff provide lots of exciting opportunities for children to explore the outside environment. Children talk about the signs of autumn, such as falling leaves and conkers, and they keenly notice squirrels in the trees.
