Little Wagtails is a day nursery in Ulverston for children from birth to two years. It operates all year round. The day nursery was inspected by Ofsted in April 2022 and received an overall judgement of Good. The inspector noted that children form strong attachments with staff and learn through a mix of self-chosen play and adult-led activities. Staff were reported to have high expectations for children's behaviour and work well with parents to plan activities based on children's interests.
The inspector found that the environment is planned to encourage exploration and that staff have good knowledge of how to develop children’s physical and social skills. The provision includes yoga sessions, and children use climbing equipment and visit the school grounds for outdoor play. When staff identify gaps in learning, they introduce specific resources to support individual progress. To improve further, Ofsted recommended strengthening staff supervision and providing better support for children's communication and language skills.

For example, staff bought in items that began with a particular sound to help children develop their pronunciation. This helps all children to continue making progress across the curriculum.
