  • Toddlers thoroughly enjoy yoga sessions, recognising positions from cue cards and persevering to balance on one leg.
  • Partnerships with parents are good, with the manager regularly seeking parent views and staff using an online system to share child development details.
  • Staff support children's communication and language skills effectively, with babies enjoying singing and signing, and toddlers showing great enjoyment in books.
  • The manager engages with staff continually to ensure she is fully aware of any pressures on their well-being from their workload, and has revised the supervision and appraisal system to be more supportive.

Areas to develop

  • 1embed the new system of planning for children's interest and learning needs to ensure that all staff are secure in their knowledge of the process
  • 2provide further opportunities for young children to develop their large-muscle and climbing skills
  • 3evaluate and revise the areas used by babies to allow staff to explore further ways in which to provide more interest and intrigue for babies in their environment.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Staff seek additional support for children who need extra help with their learning and development. They use funding effectively to support children's individual interest and learning needs.

Outdoor space

Babies and pre-school children have opportunities to enhance their large-muscle skills required for learning to climb. However, toddlers do not have to same opportunities, which does not enable them to learn about taking risks or to build on their climbing skills.

Lovely nursery with amazing people! First Steps is truly a special place. It feels very different from other nurseries I visited — it’s smaller and more personal, which made the whole transition so much easier for my daughter. The staff turnover is low, and you can really feel the stability and experience within the team. The children get to go out for lots of different activities, which I absolutely love, and the app they use makes it so easy to stay updated with photos and little notes about her day. My daughter has separation anxiety and is naturally very shy, so finding somewhere she would be genuinely cared for was incredibly important to me. The team at First Steps went above and beyond to make sure she got all the cuddles and reassurance she needed, helping her adjust gently and at her own pace. I’m so grateful for the warmth, patience, and dedication they’ve shown. I couldn’t have asked for a better nursery.

We're so grateful to the whole team for such a wonderful and memorable graduation ceremony. It was clear how much care and effort went into every detail, and we really appreciate it. It's bittersweet that our child will be leaving First Steps soon (who's been with the nursery since age of 1!), we're sad to be saying goodbye, but so thankful for all the special memories, learning, and growth he's had while being part of the nursery.

My daughter recently graduated from First Steps Nursery with a very heavy heart as she won’t be seeing the same teachers in her new school.. Alice is the one who welcomed us 2years back, warmth in her eyes and smile and connected immediately with my daughter. It is a very cute, colourful setup with areas for the kids to learn and play around. My daughter is very fond of Ms Filiz and also likes Liz, Sophie, Constance coz they made her feel safe and listened to her attentively. All the other teachers in First Steps are very kind and actively involved. The Sports day, Christmas Day, Picnics etc are really fun, even for the parents. They take lot of effort to engage our kids in a positive manner. I shall miss visiting First Steps.. it is a safe haven for our kids..

One of the best nursery’s I will confidently recommend to anyone who is looking for one. As a first time Mum I had a lot of anxiety and concerns taking my little boy ( only 11 months) to the nursery. Especially hearing/reading about all the horrifying stories and experiences of people with nurseries. However, Fortunately and very thankfully I have had the best of experience with First Steps Nursery (Merstham)! I am constantly amazed and frankly impressed with the outstanding service and wholistic nursery approach adopted by the team. Child-to-teacher ratio is excellent! Amazing, kind and supportive staff every step of the way. Excellent curriculum/ activities to engage the children. Great communication and feedback/support with your child’s progress. I have seen massive improvements in my child and I am absolutely delighted I chose First Steps Nursery for my little boy❤️

My son has been at First Steps for just under a year - the nursery have been fantastic, our little one has thrived in their care after finding nursery a really tough adjustment at first. The staff in the baby room are kind, nurturing and loving which is evident just from the small interactions we have each day and my son goes to them with open arms & cuddles. Our sons key worker is one in a million & we couldn't be more grateful for how she has bonded with our son & made us feel completely reassured that he is in the best hands. We get regular updates on the app which is great and much appreciated. The menu is always healthy & varied, the outdoor facilities are fantastic and always being improved. The rooms are bright, well equipped and the children always seem to be having a great time from the pics we see. I'm looking forward to my son moving to Toddler Room with the team there who seem as equally switched on, kind, loving and friendly and we think he'll continue to love nursery & thrive in the First Steps environment. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.
