Opening hours
08:00 - 18:00, Monday to Friday, 50 weeks a year
Harwich Connexions Windmill Nursery Limited was established in 2024 and operates as a childcare on non-domestic premises setting in Ramsey, Harwich, catering to children aged 1 to 5 years. The nursery is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm, for 50 weeks of the year.
The provision offers funded early education for all eligible children. The nursery promotes physical development through various outdoor play activities, such as children rolling and racing tyres up and down hills, which helps to develop their core strength and coordination.
In the rooms for the youngest children, interactions are warm and nurturing, with staff using descriptive language and supporting communication skills through songs and storytelling. Children also develop an awareness of the natural world through gardening activities and exploring their surroundings.
While the nursery is committed to creating a happy and safe environment, with caring and attentive staff, the most recent Ofsted inspection noted that the quality of education requires improvement to ensure consistent high standards of learning for all children. Staff demonstrate an understanding of special educational needs and/or disabilities, with specialist staff supporting children to make progress, but some children with emerging developmental needs may not receive sufficient adult interaction to support sustained engagement.
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with an open and positive culture that prioritises children's interests.
Our ethos
Harwich Connexions Windmill Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, integrating both adult-led and child-led activities. They focus on creating a homely atmosphere, fostering strong partnerships with families, and nurturing each child's learning journey with a strong emphasis on communication and emotional well-being. Natural materials are used in indoor spaces, and outdoor exploration is encouraged.
What it's like
Children are happy and safe in the nursery and staff are caring and attentive, but weaknesses in curriculum implementation, leadership oversight and behaviour management in some areas limit the impact of teaching and learning. The quality of education requires improvement to ensure all children benefit from a consistently high standard of learning.
Fees are charged at an hourly rate, with meals priced separately. Funding is accepted and stretched over 50 weeks per year, which reduces the weekly funded hours compared to the standard term-time allocation.

However, some children with emerging developmental needs do not receive sufficient adult interaction to support sustained engagement or learning.
Outdoor play supports children's physical development. Children roll and race tyres up and down hills, developing their core strength and coordination. Children explore textures as they mix sand and water together to make sandcastles, and younger children develop balance and coordination as they navigate the outdoor environments.
