Katherine Wheel Pre-School, established in 1997, offers a nurturing and engaging environment for children aged 2 to 4 years. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm during term time, the pre-school received a Good rating in its latest Ofsted inspection on 4th May 2022.
Children arrive confidently and quickly settle into a variety of inviting activities, forming strong bonds with welcoming and sensitive staff. The pre-school fosters good behaviour, encouraging children to share, take turns, and play cooperatively, preparing them for their next stage of learning.
A love for reading is developed through a wide range of books, and children enjoy imaginative play, even transforming the garden climbing frame into a space rocket. Staff have high expectations for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and work closely with outside agencies to provide swift extra support.
The curriculum is ambitious, carefully following children's interests, and children benefit from a significantly enhanced outdoor learning space with plentiful resources, including opportunities to build obstacle courses from planks, crates, and tyres. Staff also place a strong focus on developing communication and language skills through constant talk and signing.
Parents speak highly of the provision and their children's progress, further highlighting the effectiveness of the pre-school's well-managed key-person system and communication with families.

Inclusion & environment
Staff have high expectations for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. They get to know children's individual needs and interests well. The manager and staff form effective professional relationships with outside agencies, and children are swiftly provided with extra support, where needed, to help them make good progress in their learning and development.
Staff understand the importance of promoting children's physical development. For instance, they provide opportunities outdoors for children to plan and make an obstacle course from planks, crates and tyres. Children develop their physical skills as they learn to balance and negotiate the course. The garden area has been significantly enhanced with an outdoor learning space and plentiful resources, allowing children to play and explore.
