About this day nursery

Kids Planet Kirkby, operational since 2023, provides childcare for children aged 1 to 4 years from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery, rated 'Good' by Ofsted in November 2024, offers a welcoming environment where managers are dedicated to giving children the best start.

The entrance features an 'advice station' for parents, providing helpful information and practical support. Staff greet children warmly, taking time to learn about their well-being, which helps children feel secure and ready to learn.

The curriculum is designed to be ambitious for all children. Babies are encouraged to explore treasure baskets, investigating objects, textures, and sounds, and learning new words such as 'slimy' and 'squeeze'.

Older children engage in activities such as making prints in dough with pine cones and exploring sensory materials like foam and gloop, fostering their language and thinking skills. The nursery places a strong emphasis on physical development; staff challenge children with obstacle courses outdoors, helping them build confidence and resilience.

Key-person arrangements are well-established, with staff utilising screening tools to identify any developmental delays early and providing targeted support through individual plans and referrals to external agencies. Children are given many opportunities to develop strong language skills through stories, songs, and adapted room layouts, including role-play areas.

Positive behaviour is encouraged through clear explanations and praise. Children are also supported in developing independence by following good hygiene routines and taking responsibility for tasks like scraping their plates after lunch.

Parents are kept informed of their child's progress and receive communication strategies used in the nursery to support learning at home.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Key-person arrangements are well established. Staff know children very well. For example, they use screening tools to track and assess language skills and involvement levels. Staff use this information to identify any developmental delays early. They take swift action to refer to agencies and develop individual support plans. As a result, children get the targeted help they need to close any gaps in learning.

Outdoor space

Staff challenge children to navigate an obstacle course outdoors. Young children know they must lift their knees high over the hurdles to clear them and replace them in the correct position when they knock them over. As a result, children build confidence and resilience, which helps to lay strong foundations for future learning.
