Ladybird Nursery, situated on the grounds of Southend Hospital in Cardigan Avenue, provides childcare for children from birth to five years old. While priority is given to full-time placements for staff of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, the nursery welcomes all families.
The nursery operates 52 weeks a year, closing only for bank holidays, with opening hours from 6:45 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Their approach to learning is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, focusing on creating a homely and calming environment rich with natural resources to spark curiosity and wonder.
Children are assigned a key person and participate in a diverse range of activities tailored to their individual developmental needs and interests. The nursery places a strong emphasis on outdoor play, offering three distinct garden areas for children to explore daily, regardless of the weather.
They also utilise an online learning journal called Tapestry, allowing parents to track their child's progress and contribute to their learning journey. SEND provision
Leaders have high ambitions for all children. Additional funding is used well to ensure that children who need further support get the help that they need. There is an effective key-person system that allows all staff to be aware of children's next steps and individual needs.
Outdoor space
Older children spend a large amount of time in the forest garden. Staff understand that this benefits children who enjoy learning outdoors and support their play well to encourage imaginative skills. All children enjoy being physically active, with staff supporting babies learning to walk and toddlers developing gross-motor skills on the outdoor climbing frame.

I enrolled my son when he is 7 months. I would say the girls in Duckling are wonderful. He is enjoying the nursery. He has developed a lot being in the nursery. I would recommend this 💯. Those girls so lovely and reassuring by calling us and update how he is in the nursery after we dropped him that puts our mindrest. Thanks Niki, jess, Bilijo and all others ❤️ 😘

Our experience at ladybirds nursery has been nothing but wonderful. The staff are so warm, caring, enthusiastic and reassuring. It’s evident that the staff take pride in caring for and nurturing my children. I have two toddlers are the nursery and both are flourishing at ladybirds. I have total peace of mind handing my babies over knowing they are in the best hands they can be away from their parents. I also love the tapestry app and seeing photos of my children whilst they are at nursery.

My two girls have been attending Ladybird nursery for 6 weeks now and could not be happier. All staff have been fantastic in settling in both my children (in different age rooms), they really do go the extra mile to create activities that cater for all children within their care. They care about each child’s interests, progress and promote parental feedback. They also have a fantastic Montessori style approach in line with ‘the curiosity approach’ to learning and understand the importance of outdoor learning. I highly recommend Ladybird Nursery to prospective parents ❤️

My daughter settled in very well to Ladybird nursery. She is always excited to go and loves all the staff. They are all very friendly and have lots of different activities including lovely trips to the park and lots of playing in the garden.

Enrolled my son when he was 10 months old, couldn't be happier! Staff is amazing and my boy is always so excited when going to the nursery, he loves it 🥰 I noticed amazing changes in his skills development and lovely staff is working closely with me If I have any concerns or questions. Enrollment in this nursery was one of the best decisions we have ever made for him 😊
