About this day nursery

Seahawk Under Fives, located in Gosport at 201 St Nicholas Avenue, is part of the larger Naval Under Fives group. The preschool, which holds a "Good" rating from Ofsted (last inspected in January 2025), is run by a small team of four dedicated staff members.

They focus on creating a nurturing, engaging, and nature-rich environment, emphasising eco-conscious practices and outdoor learning, which earned them a Silver Award in the RSPB Wild Challenge. The preschool adopts a hands-on, child-led approach, promoting "loose parts play" where children use everyday materials to spark creativity, problem-solving, and independence.

This approach supports both physical and cognitive development through exploration, building, and imaginative play. Seahawk Under Fives is actively involved in environmental activities, including Community Clean-Up Days, and supports wildlife through adopting a giraffe at Marwell Zoo.

They also engage children with "Gilbert the teddy," their mascot, who joins them for daily activities and even accompanies them on holidays, fostering strong home-preschool connections. The preschool aims to be a place where children can grow, thrive, and enjoy their early learning experiences.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Leaders use additional funding appropriately; for example, staff recently attended training to improve their teaching for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Staff work positively with outside agencies to ensure that children with SEND receive individualised support at the earliest opportunity. They ensure that children can take part in all activities and experiences. Staff also use visual aids and sign language to help children's understanding, particularly children with SEND, to be good communicators.

Outdoor space

Children learn to take managed risks in the outdoor area to help build their self-confidence. Children use litter pickers to help to tidy up the local community. This helps children to learn to take care of the environment around them.
