Shadsworth Childrens Centre, located in Blackburn, Lancashire, offers a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for children aged two to three. Established in 2008 and operated by the local authority, the centre prioritises children's safety and development.
The dedicated team of nine childcare staff, including eight with Level 3 early years qualifications and one qualified teacher, ensures a high standard of care and education. The nursery operates during term time, from 8:45 am to 3:25 pm, Monday to Friday.
Children benefit from a wide range of indoor and outdoor resources, fostering their natural curiosity and encouraging independent learning. The centre places a strong emphasis on developing children's social skills and communication, particularly supporting those with English as an additional language through various strategies.
Parents are actively involved in their children's learning journey, with opportunities to stay during settling-in periods and participate in stay-and-play sessions. The centre's approach to safeguarding is effective, with staff regularly trained in child protection procedures and robust recruitment processes in place.
The outdoor environment also plays a crucial role in children's physical development and understanding of the natural world, with a large digging and gardening area available for exploration.

Inclusion & environment
Children who receive additional funding, particularly those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), are well supported. Leaders use funding creatively to meet individual needs, and staff are skilled in identifying additional needs early and working with professionals to ensure progress.
Children have access to outdoor resources and a large digging and gardening area, which helps them develop coordination and strength, and learn to care for plants.
Staff communicate with children in a range of ways, including signing and pictures, to support all children, especially those with few words in English, to become confident communicators.
