About this day nursery

Small Wonders Nursery in Stamford provides care and education for children from birth to four years old. The day nursery operates all year and is situated in a Georgian building. The outdoor spaces include a secure walled garden used for Forest School activities and an adventure playground with a mud and nature kitchen. Inside, facilities include an atelier and a soft play room. Staff use an 'in the moment planning' system to follow children's interests, and meals are prepared on-site. The day nursery has a Special Educational Needs Lead and all staff are first aid trained.

The nursery was rated Outstanding by Ofsted following an inspection in April 2025. The inspector reported that leaders and staff provide tailored care and lay firm foundations for children to develop knowledge and skills. Staff were seen to have high expectations, with babies learning to care for their environment and manage risks. Ofsted noted that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities receive immediate support from staff to help them re-engage with activities. The nursery also works with parents to involve them in their children's learning.

Our ethos

We use a system called In The Moment Planning and our team must be tuned into the children’s interest and adapt the environment and resources to support their current interest. Learning is all done through play. In our experience this is the absolutely best way to engage children and to develop their interest in learning. In addition to this we believe that care is the basis of everything that we do. Respect is a large part of our learning process.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive instant support when they begin to show they are struggling to regulate their emotions. This immediate attention from staff enables them to quickly re-engage in their activity. Children with SEND work closely with staff to develop their listening and attention skills.

Outdoor space

The inspector observed the quality of education being provided, indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact that this was having on children's learning.
