Somerville College established St. Paul's Nursery to provide childcare for its academics and postgraduates, reflecting a commitment to supporting women in their careers. This initiative, pioneered by Nobel laureate Dorothy Hodgkin, addresses the clear need for childcare solutions to enable women to pursue their work without hindrance.
As a foundational provider of such facilities, Somerville College continues to be one of the select institutions offering dedicated childcare services.

Inclusion & environment
Staff gain a comprehensive amount of information about children's backgrounds and individual needs when children first start with them. This helps them to support their interests and include unique aspects about the children and their families within their day.
Children have many opportunities to explore sensory experiences outside the nursery. Children of all ages enjoy being physically active and have fun as they explore outdoors, which allows them opportunities to climb, negotiate space and take part in imaginative play. Activities such as playing at the park and yoga help children with their balance, coordination and motor skills.
