Age range
2½ to 5 years
The Village Montessori Nursery, established in September 1999 in Theydon Bois, offers a nurturing environment for children aged 2½ (or slightly younger if developmentally ready) to 5 years. The nursery operates within a bright, self-contained space that includes a secure outdoor play area, all designed to foster social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
Their approach is rooted in the Montessori philosophy, providing children with a carefully curated selection of materials and activities to promote both learning and play. Children are encouraged to choose their own activities, allowing them to work at their own pace without competition, supported by practitioners who guide them according to their individual needs.
In addition to the Montessori curriculum, the nursery places significant emphasis on play, offering numerous opportunities for both indoor and outdoor play. The Village Montessori Nursery is a member of the Early Years Alliance and was graded "Good" by OFSTED in July 2022.
The nursery also boasts an award-winning staff member, with Debbie Palmer recognised as "Montessori Practitioner of the Year 2018" by the Montessori Schools Association.
Our ethos
The Montessori philosophy forms the basis of the nursery’s practice. The children are free to choose their activities (their work cycle), with practitioners providing guidance to meet each individual’s needs. Consequently, each child works at his/her own pace so there is no competition. We aim to meet all requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and follow each individual child to meet his/her needs through the Montessori curriculum, practice and philosophy. In addition to the Montessori curriculum, we also place a great deal of importance on the concept of play, both indoors and outdoors, and provide numerous activities to encourage play in all its forms.

Inclusion & environment
The support in place for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities is effective. Staff identify where there are emerging gaps in learning and advocate for the children to get the support they need. They liaise with outside professionals and other settings to provide a consistent approach to children's progress.
Children have daily exercise and fresh air, including activities such as yoga, indoors and in the garden. Children enjoy using a range of equipment to support their physical skills, including climbing frames, slides, balancing beams, tunnels and tyres.
