Theydon Bois Pre-School, a registered charity, is located in the semi-rural village of Theydon Bois, Essex, offering care for children aged 30 months to 5 years, 38 weeks a year. The pre-school operates Monday to Friday, with slightly shorter hours on Tuesdays.
The learning environment encompasses a spacious main hall, a dedicated story time room, and an engaging outdoor area featuring a mud kitchen, music wall, pirate ship role play, and a grassed area for plant care and exploring mini beasts. The pre-school encourages exploration and fosters independence through a blend of child-led and adult-supported play, ensuring that each child's interests and needs are central to the prepared learning environment.
It prides itself on delivering high-quality early years education, as evidenced by an "Outstanding" Ofsted rating in all areas following its July 2024 inspection. The team, led by Tammy Brandon and Christine Hall, works closely with a volunteer committee of parents and carers, emphasising strong relationships between staff and families to provide a strong foundation for each child's development.
The pre-school also encourages outdoor play in all weather, providing sheltered areas to facilitate continuous outdoor learning and the development of communication and social skills through a wide variety of activities.
Our ethos
We are a funded Pre-School based in the beautiful semi-rural village of Theydon Bois, Essex. Our Pre-School is run by a well qualified and experienced team of dedicated staff who are guided by the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Early Learning Goals (ELG’s) which support us in making a ‘holistic, best-fit judgement on your child’s development’. We provide a safe and carefully prepared learning environment where children learn and develop through a play based curriculum. Every child’s interests and needs are considered when our learning environment is prepared. All children are encouraged to be independent learners as we feel first-hand experience builds the foundations for solid learning. Staff will observe and support children’s play making and make a professional decision of when they should participate and support it. We believe child-led play is best, however we recognise that adult-led play can also be beneficial to enhance the children’s learning, therefore our teaching consists of a mix of both child and adult-led play.
