Tops Day Nurseries - Portsmouth provides childcare for children aged 0-11 years, operating all year round from Monday to Friday, 6am to 8pm, closing only for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. The nursery received a 'Good' rating in its latest Ofsted inspection on 31/05/2023.
Children are warmly welcomed, and staff demonstrate a secure understanding of each child's individual needs, ensuring they are met. The curriculum focuses on helping children build knowledge and skills through engaging activities and resources, fostering curiosity and independence.
Children learn to persevere and develop good behaviour, guided by staff. Outdoor learning is a key feature, with forest school sessions and local outings that help children understand their world and develop physical skills, including confidently navigating balance bicycles.
The nursery effectively supports children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through individual educational plans, referrals to professionals, and securing funding. For children learning English as an additional language (EAL), staff are aware of their home languages, though there is an identified area for improvement in fully integrating this knowledge to enhance children's experiences, especially when new children are settling.
Management and staff have worked to improve the provision, leading to a good oversight of quality and consistently good teaching. Staff regularly observe, assess, and monitor children's learning, promptly addressing any gaps in progress.
The nursery emphasises inclusivity, fostering positive relationships and teaching children kindness and environmental care.

Inclusion & environment
Overall, children's individual needs are known and met securely by staff. This includes children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Arrangements to support children with SEND are organised effectively. This includes implementing individual educational plans, making referrals to professionals and seeking relevant funding to support children.
Children benefit from forest school sessions and outings in the local area. These help to develop their understanding about the world they live in. Children develop their physical skills well and confidently recognise and take appropriate risks, for example, pre-school children skilfully steer balance bicycles to avoid their friends.
Children learning English as an additional language (EAL) are supported. Staff understand other languages spoken or heard at home by children. However, they do not use this information fully to enhance children's experiences, including when new children are settling.
My little one has recently started Nursery at Tops. He didn't have the best start due to illness but the staff were fantastic with him. It was great having daily handovers at pick up so I knew how his day was. I also loved the photo updates during the week that highlighted some activities he enjoyed participating in. I've been very pleased so far with everything.
Read on GoogleAmazing friendly caring nursery. Made going back to work easy as they keep you informed and updated. My grandson goes in smiling and comes out smiling. They are super helpful with sorting out admin stuff as I was useless at it. He loves all the staff especially the ladies.......... even the staff in the other rooms that are for the older children are chatty and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. I feel at ease leaving him while I work knowing he is having a great time. The last year has flown by tops was definitely the right choice.
Read on GoogleGreat nursery, daughter loves it here. Always happy to go in and all the adults know her by her name even if they don't work in her room. She is always very happy here and settled so quickly. She gets excited to see some members of staff which she seems to have made a bond with. Usually Jackie and Alex.
Read on GoogleVery good nursery, my son loves spending time there. He is very fond of Liam on hi5. Liam is very caring to the children no wonder all the children are “crazy” about him, my son included.
Read on GoogleMy 2 year old son and 1 year old daughter attend Tops in Cosham and I cannot fault them. My son is always so happy to go and when he first started this wasn’t the case. Now he asks to go on his days off. His speech has developed massively. The variety of activities is amazing more than I imagined he would do. My daughter has settled in very quickly and gets super excited when we get to the door. I would recommend this nursery to anyone they have looked after my children as if they are their own and I’m so grateful at how caring and attentive they are. Faultless setting for little people to thrive in.
