Children and babies at Torwood House Nursery School form strong bonds with staff in a caring environment where their safety and well-being are closely supported, fostering effective confidence-building. Toddlers particularly enjoy playing in the 'pirate ship garden' or riding scooters, while staff thoughtfully follow home routines to ensure babies' well-being.

The curriculum is developed with staff collaboration, linking to children's interests and learning needs. Outdoors, children readily explore spacious playgrounds, using equipment like slides, trikes, and football nets to build physical skills.

The nursery supports children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) through key persons who observe play, identify learning gaps, and act promptly if children are behind expected development. They liaise with the nursery's two SENCos, both of whom have relevant Level 3 qualifications, and work with parents to outline suitable support.

How they support every child

SEND provision

Key persons observe children as they play, taking note of children's achievements and outlining any gaps in their learning. They act promptly if children are behind expected development. They liaise with the nursery's special educational needs coordinators (SENCos) and work sensitively and patiently with parents to outline suitable support to get children the help they need. Both SENCos have beneficially completed level 3 qualifications relevant to their work.

Outdoor space

Children take on challenges and build their physical skills and strength, readily exploring the wide range of equipment outside in the spacious nursery playgrounds. Young children climb up to use the slides and push themselves along on trikes. Pre-school children practise their ball skills, scoring goals with their friends in the football net.

Bristol's best kept secret! I have two girls at Torwood and both are thriving, socially and academically. They benefit greatly from the low pupil/teacher ratio, in that they read every day to their teacher who knows their personal strengths, weaknesses and learning styles. The girls are always able take part in plays/productions and sports fixtures with other schools. They know the names of all the children at the school and play across all age groups which is very special and has given them an incredible confidence and self assurance. It really is truly unique, family run with traditional values, happiness, warmth, respect and decency carried throughout.

Really amazingly caring school and very good academic results too. Great at dealing with my son's severe food allergies and, in his words, "cooking the best meals I ever had". My children have now moved to a selective secondary school and are doing really well, but they still remember Torwood and all the staff fondly.

Both our children went to Torwood for 3 plus years and it’s been a good experience for them and us. The outside area is good and the staff culture is a pleasure in general. The illness policy can be frustrating occasionally but I’m guessing that’s across all nurseries and they’re generally helpful and caring people. Thanks all!

We live Torewood House, the staff are really wonderful and our son has always loved his time here and developed well under their care. When there was an incident at the very start, it was addressed swiftly and we felt Jenine dealt with our feedback appropriately.
