Toybox Nursery, established in 1991, provides childcare for children aged 1 to 4 years in Yeovil. Open all year from 8am to 6pm, except for a two-week Christmas break, the nursery offers a consistent environment for children's development.
The setting focuses on creating a warm and secure atmosphere where children form close attachments with staff, helping them to feel safe and welcomed. The curriculum includes a strong emphasis on physical play, with a large outdoor space equipped with bikes and climbing apparatus to encourage balancing, climbing, and manoeuvring.
Staff actively support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) by using sign language, objects of reference, and picture cards to aid communication, ensuring all children make progress. The nursery fosters good behaviour and respect among children, and older children engage in learning about nature, such as the life cycle of frogs.
Children are encouraged to develop independence, with young children learning to feed themselves and older children taking responsibility for tasks like serving lunch. Parental involvement is a key strength, with managers organising stay-and-play sessions and home learning activities, and using online software for parents to share observations, ensuring consistent care and support.
Children also regularly share books and eagerly listen to stories, building a love for reading and developing listening skills. The nursery also promotes an understanding of diversity through visits to a local residential home where children interact with older people.
